Anton Grassi
Anton Mathias Grassi (born June 26, 1755 in Vienna ; † December 31, 1807 there ) was an Austrian sculptor and porcelain modeler .
Life
Anton Mathias Grassi was born as the son of the goldsmith Ottilio Grassi (1723–1791). His younger brother was the painter Josef Mathias Grassi .
In 1767 Grassi joined the special school for sculpture at the Manufactory School of the Vienna Academy . There he developed his special talent for skin relief under the direction of Franz Xaver Messerschmidt . Under the direction of the court sculptor Johann Christian Wilhelm Beyer , he worked on the design of the sculptures in the Schönbrunn Palace Park .
After this activity, Grassi was appointed model master at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory , where he worked until his death. Study trips took him to Rome in 1792 . With this he laid an important foundation stone for the development of the manufacture. From 1794 he took over the management of the higher art schools in painting and correction in history and landscape painting . Busts of Emperor Franz II , Archduke Karl , Antonio Canova and Joseph Haydn are among his main works.
In 1894, Grassigasse in Vienna- Penzing (14th district) was named after him.
