Anton Schütte (* 1817 in Coesfeld , Westphalia / Prussia ; † May 17, 1867 in Milwaukee , according to another source in Hoboken (New Jersey) / USA or New York from tuberculosis) was a political activist in Austria , journalist (newspaper correspondent), Military and successful businessman in the USA.

Activity in Europe

Anton Schütte, who had obtained his doctorate in Würzburg in 1843 after studying philology and natural sciences in Münster and Bonn , initially worked as a tutor for the von Westfalen family in Vienna . Schütte first appeared politically in the spring of 1848. He demanded the immediate establishment of a constituent parliament for Austria for the “ Verein der Volksfreunde ”, which led to his expulsion. In the summer of the same year, Schütte acts as a liaison between the left in Paulskirche , the Vienna Security Committee and the Hungarian insurgents .

Schütte emigrated to the USA with other Forty-Eighters , where he made a name for himself in the American military. The introduction of new field ovens goes back to Schütte and with it (presumably) also the introduction of Pumpernickel , a slow-baked, dark wholemeal bread.

Anton Schütte was in close contact with Friedrich Hecker .
