Anton-Wolfgang "Toni" Lothar Andreas Graf von Faber-Castell (born June 7, 1941 in Bamberg ; † January 21, 2016 in Houston , Texas ) was a German entrepreneur and member of the industrial and noble Faber-Castell family .

For almost 40 years, he was the eighth generation CEO of the stationery manufacturer Faber-Castell .

family

Anton-Wolfgang was born in 1941 as the son of the last sole owner of Faber-Castell AG , Roland Graf von Faber-Castell (1905–1978) and his second wife Katharina Sprecher von Bernegg (1917–1994). The Swiss journalist Christian Graf von Faber-Castell also comes from his marriage to Spokesman von Bergnegg . They married in 1938 and divorced in 1969. His father Roland had eight children from two marriages, including five sons. His brother Hubertus Graf von Faber-Castell (1934–2007) comes from his first marriage with Alix-May von Frankenberg and Ludwigsdorf , daughter of Victoria Freiin von Oppenheim and co-owner of the private bank Sal. Oppenheim Jr & Cie . The father's first marriage was divorced in 1935 after anti-Semitic press attacks and threats.

Anton-Wolfgang von Faber-Castell was married to Carla Mathilde Lamesch (1942-2010) from Luxembourg between June and October 1986. From this connection comes the son Charles (* 1980), who was born before the marriage. Anton-Wolfgang Graf von Faber-Castell was married to the American Mary Elizabeth Hogan (* 1951) for the second time since 1987. The couple had three daughters, including twins, between 1988 and 1996.

Life

After attending the Swiss Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz , he studied law at the University of Zurich from 1966 . He then completed a commercial training in the family company and attended the IMEDE management school in Lausanne from 1968 to 1972 . In 1972 he joined the financial firm Credit Swiss White Weld as an investment banker and worked in New York and London . In 1975 he moved to the management of the London branch of the investment bank Crédit Suisse First Boston . In the same year his father brought him into the management of AW Faber-Castell GmbH. In 1978, after the death of his father, he became the sole managing partner and when the company was converted into a stock corporation in 2000, he became CEO. The company's international expansion continued under his leadership.

The fortune of Anton-Wolfgang Graf von Faber-Castell was estimated by the German manager magazine in 2012 at around 350 million euros, which placed him 312 on the list of the richest Germans. He held various supervisory board mandates at the Nürnberger Versicherung , which was founded by an ancestor .

He was Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Brazil , with the consulate located in the company building. He was also involved as chairman of the board of bayern design forum eV and chairman of the donors' association for the Museum of Industrial Culture Nuremberg .

Anton-Wolfgang von Faber-Castell died on January 21, 2016 at the age of 74 after a serious illness in Houston , Texas . His four children Charles, Katharina, Sarah and Victoria inherited him.

Anton-Wolfgang Graf von Faber-Castell carried out an unusual quality test himself in May 2012. Together with the head of the Faber-Castell laboratory, Gerhard Lugert, he invited international media representatives to a special kind of cocktail reception: he and the head of the laboratory each drank a glass of ink from Faber-Castell's production, which demonstrates the environmental compatibility of the Faber-Castell Castell children's felt pens should be demonstrated.
