Antonio Santacroce (Cardinal)

Antonio Santacroce (born August 1, 1599 in Rome ; † November 25, 1641 there ) was an Italian cardinal and Roman Catholic archbishop.

biography

He was born in Rome to Marcello Publicola Santacroce (who became Marchese of Pietraforte in 1639) and Porzia of the family of the Marchesi of Drago. Many cardinals of the Catholic Church come from his family (Antonio's uncle Prospero , his nephew Marcello and his great-nephew Andrea were also cardinals).

He was trained in Rome and obtained a doctorate in law . In 1621 he came under Pope Gregory XV. a house prelate at the papal court and was appointed Apostolic Protonotary on March 24, 1621 . He was then governor of the provinces of Campagna and Marittima (from 1625) and was sent to Paris as Legat a latere with Cardinal Francesco Barberini .

Although he had not yet reached the required age of 30, he was elected titular Archbishop of Seleucia in Isauria by Pope Urban VIII on March 1, 1627 . He received episcopal ordination on March 21 of the same year in the Basilica of Sant'Andrea della Valle by the Bishop of Viterbo , Cardinal Tiberio Muti . On April 16, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Poland .

He was elevated to cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Nereo ed Achilleo on November 19, 1629 in the consistory and was cardinal legate of Bologna from 1631 to 1634 .

On March 10, 1631 he was transferred to Metropolitan of Chieti and then on June 9, 1636 to that of Urbino . He was hardly concerned with the administration of his dioceses and preferred to delegate his duties to vicars. However, he resigned in 1639.

In 1641 he died of tuberculosis in Rome and was buried in the Church of Santa Maria in Publicolis .
