Ara Warkes Darzi, Baron Darzi of Denham KBE , OM , PC , FMedSci , HonFREng , FRCS , FRCSI , FRCSEd , FRCPSG , FACS , FCGI , FRCPE FRCP HonFRCPI (born May 7, 1960 in Iraq ) is a British man of Armenian descent and born in Iraq Surgeon , university professor and Labor Party politician who has been a Life Peer member of the House of Lords since 2007 .

Life

Darzi was born in Baghdad , where he lived as a refugee with his sister and family. Part of his family are survivors of the Armenian genocide . His grandfather and his sons were executed during the genocide, while the daughter and grandmother survived by pretending to be dead. Darzi's family lived in Erzurum, from where they fled the genocide and wandered penniless on foot to Mosul . Darzi's father was born in Baghdad in 1930, where he met his mother. Darzi attended Armenian masses with his family, was a choirboy and learned the Armenian language .

Surgeon and professor

After schooling completed Darzi to study medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and holds a Doctor of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin . He was a surgeon at Middlesex Hospital in London between 1991 and 1994 and then became a surgeon at St Mary's Hospital in London . In 1994 he moved to the Imperial College London and was next 1995-2001 Tutor for surgery in the digestive tract at the Royal College of Surgeons of England , and from 1995 to 1999 Member of the Council of the surgical section of the Royal School of Medicine .

In 1996 he took over the Paul Hamlyn - Professor of Surgery at Imperial College London and was subsequently also board member of the Association for Coloproctology (1997 to 1999) and member of the Policy and Evaluation Advisory Group Nuffield Trust (1997 to 2001). In 1998, he became the Hunterian Professorship at the Royal College of Surgeons and also became director of the Department of Surgical Technology and Biosurgery and the Principal Department of Surgery, Oncology , Reproductive Biology and Anesthesia in the Medical Faculty of Imperial College.

During this time he also became a member of the Steering Board of the Society for Surgical Research ( Surgical Research Society ) in 1998 and a member of the educational department of the Royal College of Surgeons and was also secretary and advisory board member of the Society for Minimally Invasive Therapy between 1998 and 1999. Darzi, who has been a member of the National Health Service (NHS) Steering Committee for New and Emerging Technologies Technologies since 1999 and a member of the Education Committee of the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons (EAES), was both a member of the NHS Modernization Action Group and Chairman of the London Modernization Agency.

In recognition of his services, he became Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2002 and from then on carried the suffix "Sir". Darzi is also a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences , the Royal Academy of Engineering , the Royal College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland , the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh , the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow , the American College of Surgeons , the City and Guilds of London Institute , the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh , the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland . In 2013 he became a member of the Royal Society . In 2016 he received the Order of Merit .

House of Lords and Junior Minister

By a letters patent dated July 12, 2007, Darzi was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Darzi of Denham , of Gerrards Cross in the County of Buckinghamshire . Shortly thereafter took place on 19 July 2007 its introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the House of Lords he belongs to the Labor Party faction .

He subsequently served as Secretary of State in the Department of Health during the tenure of Prime Minister Gordon Brown between 2007 and 2010 and became Privy Councilor in 2009 .
