Geography and climate
Arapongas is located directly below the Tropic of Capricorn in a flat area interrupted only by gentle heights. The rivers and streams that run through the urban area all drain to the Rio Paraná . The climate is determined by hot, humid summers as well as cooler and drier winters with occasional frosts in June and July, called Cfa according to the Köppen-Geiger classification .
The predominant biome is Mata Atlântica .
history
The settlement of the hinterland of Paraná was a colonization project of the Companhia de Terras do Norte do Paraná (CTNP), from which the Companhia Melhoramentos Norte do Paraná (CMNP) arose, they had been able to found 61 cities there and sold numerous settlement plots. Later the area was opened up by the Companhia Ferroviária São Paulo-Paraná railway line. The French businessman René Cellot is named as the first property buyer in Arapongas for 1935.
Claude Lévi-Strauss mentions the city in his book Sad Tropics . He had visited it in 1935, when it had just been founded and had only one resident.
In addition to the settlement core, the colonies of Esperança and Orle had formed through Slavic (Ukrainian) and Japanese immigrants. The core settlement already had 600 houses in 1945.
The territory was under the municipality of Londrina until 1943 , when Rolândia was spun off from Londrina, to which it belonged until the next territorial reform. On October 10, 1947, Arapongas was spun off from Rolândia and received the status of a municipality. The many inhabitants who used to belong to Rolândia contributed suddenly to the population growth. At the time, it had a municipal area of 2007 km². The Estrada de Ferro São Paulo-Paraná brought further progress. Administratively, the municipality was divided into three districts: the main district of Arapongas, the Distrito de Astorga and the Distrito de Sabáudia . Both became independent cities, first Astorga on November 14, 1951 , followed by Sabáudia on November 26, 1954 . Since then, Arapongos has consisted of a single district. The community developed rapidly, after the onset of coffee cultivation in the 1970s, rural exodus began, and urban arapongas grew, in which over 97% of the population already lived in 2010. The economy shifted to the production of cheap furniture and was able to keep up with the surrounding communities. It has several industrial parks.
It bears the nickname City of Birds (Cidade dos Pássaros), Araponga comes from the Tupi-Guarani and is the name of a decorative bird species . Three birds are symbolized in the city coat of arms and the city flag.
Local government
The executive rests with the city prefect (mayor). In the local elections in 2016 , Sérgio Onofre da Silva des Partido Social Cristão (PSC) was elected city prefect for the term from 2017 to 2020.
The first elected mayor, João Cernichiaro, took office on July 22, 1951.
The legislature rests with a city council, the vereadores of the Câmara Municipal.
