The König-Pilsener-Arena is a multi-purpose hall in the North Rhine-Westphalian city ​​of Oberhausen .

history

The event hall is located near the CentrO - shopping center . The construction time was 14 months and the construction costs were 45 million . The arena was officially opened on September 8, 1996. The rock band Status Quo gave the first concert on September 21st. Originally the hall was called Arena Oberhausen , since January 1st, 2002 it has been named after the König brewery from the neighboring city of Duisburg due to a name sponsorship .

The arena is part of the Neue Mitte Oberhausen . In this structural change project in the Ruhr area , the 143 hectare area of ​​a disused Thyssen steelworks ( Gutehoffnungshütte ) was transformed into a leisure and shopping center. Embedded in the infrastructure of the Neue Mitte, the arena offers its visitors comfortable arrival and departure with over 14,000 free parking spaces, several motorway connections and a stop for public transport in the immediate vicinity.

The arena holds 12,650 people. The grandstands are horseshoe-shaped with one open side. 10,000 places are installed on two levels. Depending on the organizer's wishes, the stage can also be set up as a center stage, with a maximum capacity of 12,000 people. There are also two theater configurations designed for 3,000 and 5,200 people. The arena also has 22 event suites.

Events are primarily concerts and sporting events. Even shows like Stomp , Riverdance , the Youth Day of the New Apostolic Church in North Rhine-Westphalia or the awarding of 1 Live Krone took place in the arena.

In the seasons 1997/98 to 2001/02 the disputed ice hockey team of Revierlöwen Oberhausen their home games in the arena. In 1997/98 the hall was also the home of the Bundesliga basketball team Ruhr Devils . The German national ice hockey team played twice against Russia as part of the Euro Hockey Challenge 2015 . At the Euro Hockey Challenge 2016 there were two international matches against Belarus in the arena . On May 25, 2017, the finale of the 12th season of Germany's Next Topmodel was held in the König-Pilsener-Arena.

The heavyweight boxer Manuel Charr occurred on 25 November 2017. 5,000 spectators in the arena for World Cup battle of the WBA against the Russians Alexander Ustinov on. Charr won the fight unanimously on points (115: 111, 116: 111, 115: 112).

The arena was operated by SMG Entertainment Deutschland GmbH, a 100 percent subsidiary of the global SMG based in Philadelphia . This merged with AEG Facilities to ASM Global in October 2019 .

Henrik Häcker was the managing director of the König-Pilsener-Arena from October 10, 2017 to July 20, 2020. He left the company early to take a new position at the Deutsches Museum in Munich.

In April 2015, the arena management was criticized for making the building available to ADÜTDF for a political event. ADÜTDF is a Turkish organization that is close to the right-wing extremist Gray Wolves . Both organizations are monitored by the constitution protection . Despite this, the event took place on April 26, 2015 without any particular incidents or counter-demonstrations.
