Arguvan is a town and capital of the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Malatya . Arguvan County is located in the north of the province and borders the Elazığ and Sivas provinces . 2099 people live in the city of Arguvan and 8711 people in the entire county (as of 2008). The name of the city has had different variants over the course of history 1079 in Armenian Argavan or ancient Greek Argaoún / Argaós . Bilge Umar traces the name back to the Luwian word Arga. In the Ottoman Empire and until 1957 the name Tahir was used. The city is one of the few places that bears its former name again.
The population of Arguvan consists of Turks and Kurds , Alevis and Sunnis . Along with Tephrike, the city is one of the two fortress cities founded by the Paulicians in the 9th century.
Arguvan is the original Greek place name, which was first recorded in writing in the 9th century. At the time of the Ottoman Empire, the place was called "Tahir". Arguvan is one of the few examples of a renaming back to the original name. The renaming took place in 1957.
