Yeşilyurt ( Turkish for Green Home ; Kurdish Çirmik ) is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Malatya . In the north it borders on the city of Malatya , in the west on the districts of Akçadağ and Doğanşehir , in the south on the province of Adıyaman .
The south of the district is surrounded by the Malatya Dağları, the foothills of the Taurus Mountains . The highest point is the Beydağı at 2,545 m. The area is 568 km², the district has 45,551 inhabitants (status: 2000).
economy
The region's economy consists mainly of agriculture, animal husbandry, weaving mills and small industrial plants. The main products are: wheat , barley , apricots , cherries, tobacco and grapes. Bees, goats and sheep are kept in the higher areas of the district. Textile companies are also located here, producing threads, wool and textile articles.
history
It was an Armenian place until the beginning of the 20th century . No archaeological excavations have yet been carried out in Yeşilyurt. Therefore, not much is known about the history of this region. Byzantine ruins from the eighth and ninth centuries have been discovered in Kalatepe. These buildings were used as a guard station at that time. During the Ottoman Empire the place was called Çirmikti . After the founding of the Republic of Turkey it was called İsmet Paşa and in 1957 it was renamed Yeşilyurt for political reasons .
Recreation areas
On the scenic banks of the Derme Suyu River , also popularly known as Beyler deresi , there are parks and gardens that are used by the locals for barbecues and picnics. One of the most popular places is Pınarbaşı , the source of the Beyler deresi .
