Artjom Jurjewitsch Kopot ( Russian Артём Юрьевич Копоть ; * July 25, 1972 in Chelyabinsk , Russian SFSR ; † July 24, 1992 ibid.) Was a Russian ice hockey player , who until his death for the HK tractor Chelyabinsk in the highest Soviet league, the Wysschaja League , played on the position of defender . In the 1992 NHL Entry Draft , Kopot was selected in the sixth round in 139th place by the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League . One day before his 20th birthday, he was killed in a traffic accident in the town where he was born . The greatest success of his career was winning the gold medal at the U20 World Junior Championship in Sweden in 1992 with the team of the Commonwealth of Independent States .

Career

Kopot learned to play ice hockey in the youth department of the HK Tractor Chelyabinsk , one of the ice hockey clubs in his native Chelyabinsk in the Urals . The defender's talent enabled him to draw attention to himself for the first time after the fall of the Iron Curtain at the 1990 U18 European Junior Championship in Sweden . In the preliminary round, the Sbornaja qualified for the championship round , despite a defeat against the hosts, where they could no longer move up to first place. While Sweden won the gold medal, Kopot returned to Chelyabinsk with the silver medal. In the course of the tournament he had played in all six games of the USSR and had scored one goal and prepared another.

After another year in the junior squad, Kopot made it into the professional squad of Traktor for the 1991/92 season , which at that time was taking part in the Vysschaya League , the highest Soviet division. The defender was immediately given a regular place in the squad and was used in 28 of the 34 main and intermediate round games in which he remained pointless and received 16 penalty minutes. The failures were due to participation in the U20 Junior World Championship in 1992 - Kopot's second international tournament. In a team with later NHL players such as Nikolai Chabibulin , Alexei Yashin , Darius Kasparaitis , Alexei Kowaljow , Andrei Nikolischin , Sandis Ozoliņš and his teammate from Chelyabinsk, Rawil Gusmanow , Kopot won with the team of the Commonwealth of Independent States , which still won the tournament under the The name and flag of the USSR had started receiving the gold medal. In the round of eight teams, the CIS prevailed despite a tournament defeat against Sweden and the United States. The defender played all seven of his team's games and prepared a goal. He also spent six minutes in the penalty box.

With Chelyabinsk Kopot had finished the 1991/92 season of the Vysschaya League in sixth place. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union made it possible for the players to pursue their sport outside the confederation, the NHL Entry Draft in 1991 showed that the NHL franchises were already showing increased interest in players from the former Soviet republics. This trend continued on June 20, 1992 at the 1992 NHL Entry Draft in Montreal , Canada . With the sixth of their ten voting rights and - alongside the Czechoslovaks Martin Straka and Jan Alinč - as one of three Europeans , the Pittsburgh Penguins selected the Russian in 139th place in the sixth round. Kopot was also the first Russian player to be drafted by the Penguins in their franchise history .

A good month after the draft and a day before his 20th birthday, Kopot was killed in a traffic accident on July 24, 1992 . As announced on July 25, the Pittsburgh Penguins spokesman Harry Sanders, the solo accident occurred near Kopot's house in Chelyabinsk. Further information was not disclosed.
