The Asia-Pacific Week Berlin (until 2017 "Asia-Pacific Weeks"; abbreviation: APW), which was founded in 1997, is an international platform for knowledge transfer and cooperation between European and Asian non-governmental organizations , companies, scientific and public institutions. The Asia-Pacific Weeks took place every two years until 2017, and every year since then, on a selected main topic.

concept

The main aim of the Asia-Pacific Weeks is to enable a dialogue between Asian and German actors, whereby the main topic of Smart City involves the capital Berlin and local projects, e.g. For example, the Prinzessinnengärten in Kreuzberg were the venue and model garden for the “Urban Gardening” event by the Asian Social Business Community.

history

In the 2000s, the Asia-Pacific Weeks developed from a cultural action week into an international, business-related platform that offers a space for dialogue between German and Asian actors.

1997 The first Asia-Pacific Weeks Berlin

The then Federal President Roman Herzog opened the Asia-Pacific Weeks in the Rotes Rathaus, which over a period of four weeks offered 180 events by more than 160 public institutions and private companies from 16 countries. B. cultural events, symposiums, seminars or lectures. The establishment of the Asia-Pacific Weeks in Berlin was controversial in public, as Berlin had no immediate history of Euro-Asian cooperation.

1999 country focus on Japan

In 1999, the focus of the Asia-Pacific Weeks was still on cultural exchange, in contrast to today's Asia-Pacific Weeks, which have had an economic focus since 2013. The 110 cultural events of the Asia-Pacific Weeks had 150,000 spectators, while the 38 business and investment seminars only had 3,500 participants.

2001 country focus on China

"Since China and Germany are close economic partners, getting to know each other's culture is welcomed on the political side."

In this context, the State Council Information Office of the People's Republic of China made the world's largest presentation of Chinese civilization abroad. Gerhard Schröder , then Federal Chancellor , called for further cooperation between medium-sized and small companies in both countries.

2003 country focus on India

Today's condition as a concert hall, 2009

Gerhard Schröder, then Federal Chancellor, opened the fourth Asia-Pacific Weeks in the Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt, which offered over 250 events. Thirteen embassies took part in the Asia-Pacific Weeks in 2003, more than twice as many as in the previous year. The focus was on culture, for example Sri Sri Ravi Shankar gave a lecture called “Living human values” in the Red City Hall. The Asian culture market on the Schloßplatz in Berlin was well attended with 30,000 visitors per day.

2005 country focus on Korea

Korean Garden Berlin-Marzahn

The city of Seoul donated the Korean Garden to the Marzahn Recreation Park . The then mayor of Seoul Lee Myung Bak put the focus of the Korean events on culture instead of economy, because for him Berlin was economically burdened by German reunification , which could only be normalized again after a generation.

2007 Sustainability in Urban Infrastructures

18 Asia-Pacific fashion designers were invited to present their collections at a fashion show "InFashion Asia-Pacific Weeks 2007" running parallel to Berlin Fashion Week .

Because the connection between Berlin and Beijing had not been studied historically, the Heimatmuseum Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf developed the first exhibition “Chinese in Berlin”.

2009 Mobility - Energy

The reading and participation of Liao Yiwu in the literary event "Writing China" in the House of World Cultures was successfully prevented by the People's Republic of China .

2011 Health - Nutrition - Water

Foreign trade cooperation and development cooperation were integrated in a form of matchmaking for the first time in Germany between German and Asian participants. Sensor badges lit up as soon as participants with common interests came closer. Ultimately, the traditional separation of trade and development policy was weakened through the use of innovative matchmaking technology.

The opening exhibition of the winning posters of the international competition "Water is Life - Water is Life" took place at the Berlin University of the Arts ; further exhibitions in Beijing and Mumbai followed .

2013 Smart Cities

After the share of trade with Asia compared to Europe had increased by 11% compared to 2005, the Asia-Pacific Weeks in 2013 were geared more towards visitors from business. Institutionally, too, the management of the Asia-Pacific Weeks was handed over from the Senate Chancellery of the Governing Mayor, then Klaus Wowereit , to the Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research. Since Berlin “would not get the necessary prosperity in the city with its internal forces [...] alone”, the Senator for Economics of the State of Berlin, Cornelia Yzer , decided in favor of an economic focus of the Asia-Pacific Weeks and against a large part of the cultural program.

The new main topic “Smart Cities” was relevant for the Asian participants.

“If one day China reaches the same degree of urbanization as developed countries, the urban population will be around one billion. With what structure of energies and resources can one supply so many city dwellers? "

- Shi Mingde : Speech by the Chinese Ambassador Shi Mingde at the Asia-Pacific Weeks, Berlin, June 6, 2013

2015 Smart Cities

CityCube Berlin

For the first time, the business and technology conference “Smart Solutions for Urban Challenges” will take place in the CityCube Berlin during the Metropolitan Solutions trade fair as part of the Asia-Pacific Weeks . There will be a professional exchange about smart city solutions and their business and financing models, standards, open data applications and procurement models. At the first "Startup Conference Asia-Pacific" participants will discuss Berlin as an incubator for new companies, universities and technology parks , established industrial companies and venture capital funds. With start-up employees and executives, experts will work out the opportunities and risks of globalizing their production chains, financing, sales markets and personnel.

2016 Asia-Europe Innovation Dialogue

“More than 1,000 guests took part in over 100 APW events over 12 days. In particular, the opening event, embassy day and the "Connecting Startup Cities" conference enabled effective networking and offered starting points for cooperation. A cooperation agreement was signed between the startup hubs in Berlin and Shanghai. And a new start-up network between Berlin, Manila, Jakarta and Bangalore was founded: StartUp AsiaBerlin. In this context, APW partner events are planned for October 2016 in the three Asian cities. A special highlight of the first week was the pitching session. "

APW today

The Asia-Pacific Weeks are now a major international event that is co-financed to a small extent by major global corporations ( Huawei 2011, Siemens always, Daimler always, etc.). The main topic of the events has changed from general country focal points from 2005 to questions of the “Smart City”.

While partial aspects of the “Smart City” topic were dealt with individually for the Asia-Pacific Weeks, depending on the industry, in 2015 cross-sectional topics that affect all industries will be discussed. The questions of financing, procurement and sales of companies in large cities replace the thematic division according to the mobile, safe, green and creative city.

Reception and public perception of the APW

In contrast to Hamburg or Düsseldorf , Berlin does not have equivalent relationships with Asian city-states or cities, which is why the benefits of the Asia-Pacific Weeks are questioned in view of the costs of the major event. However, the decentralized organization and financing of the respective events under the umbrella brand APW spreads the costs over various actors and lowers the expenses of the state of Berlin, i. H. individual organizers finance themselves and have more freedom in terms of content and design Alice Ströver criticized the economic focus of the Asia-Pacific Weeks, as governments and business representatives have little interest in “critical culture”. In some business events, only Asian or European guests took part, although networking between both sides was desired.
