Vegetative characteristics

The alpine lover grows as a wintering green, perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 5 to 30 centimeters. Its rhizome is quite thin, 2–3 mm in diameter, sloping downward and abundantly provided with adventitious roots. The stems are erect or slightly arched and only leafed at the base. They are round, finely grooved and hairy with loosely curly hair. The hair below the head is thicker and more close-fitting. The leaves are arranged in a basal rosette and have long stalks. The elliptical or spatulate leaf blade is hairy. The leaf margins are smooth or bluntly serrated, especially in the front part. The teeth are more or less directed forward and provided with a tiny tip. The shape of the leaf blade is quite variable, those of the lowest leaves are small, rounded and spatulate, those of the other leaves are obovate or elliptical. The petiole can be a third of the length of the blade up to twice the length.

Generative characteristics

The individually terminally standing cup-shaped inflorescences have a diameter of 2 to 4 centimeters. The long, pointed bracts stand in two rows . The bracts are 5–10 mm long and 1–2 mm wide. The bottom of the head is conical. The flower heads contain ray and tubular flowers. While the top of the ray florets is white, the underside is often reddish in color. The tubular flowers are yellow. Each head has about 40–50 ray-florets.

The achenes are hairy and, in contrast to the achenes of the daisies ( Bellis ), have a pappus . This pappus consists of 4–5 mm long, yellowish-white, finely rough bristles.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The alpine dimension lover occurs mainly on lawns, rocks and scree in the high mountains of the Alps , but also spreads along nutrient-poor moors and moor forests as well as at springs and their foothills. It occurs mainly in societies of the order Seslerietalia albicantis, but also in those of the Caricion davallianae or Cratoneurion commutati societies at lower altitudes. It is a pioneer plant that likes to grow with the common cornflower (Tofieldia calyculata). Its distribution area includes France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Balkan Peninsula and Romania. In the Allgäu Alps it rises north of the Ifen summit to an altitude of 2000 meters, but it may also occur higher.

Systematics

This species was in 1753 by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum , 1, p 886 under the name Doronicum Bellidiastrum L. first published . This name has been replaced by Bellidiastrum michelii published in 1817 by Alexandre Henri Gabriel de Cassini in Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles , 4, p. 71. Other synonyms for Bellidiastrum michelii Cass. are: Aster bellidiastrum (L.) Scop. , Bellidiastrum bellidiastrum (L.) H. Karst. Bellidiastrum michelii belongs to the genus Bellidiastrum from the tribe Astereae in the subfamily Asteroideae within the family Asteraceae .
