The Augraben is a small river in the Mecklenburg Lake District, which was formed in 2011 in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It rises in Mecklenburg near Stavenhagen and flows into the Tollense in Western Pomerania near Demmin , which in turn flows into the Peene there .
geography
From the source in the municipality of Ritzerow - six kilometers south-east of Stavenhagen - the Augraben reaches the Ivenacker See after nine and a half kilometers , which itself makes up one and a half kilometers of the stretch of water. From there it flows further north through the Augraben lowlands.
From the east - shortly before Lindenberg - the Mühlenborn drain of the Tützer See flows into it . Because of the union with a small brook from Altenhagen it has two different water numbers in its course.
From Beggerow, the excavation has dug into a valley about 20 m deep. Here it gets its biggest tributary from the east, the Strehlower Bach . Soon after, the old Leistenow watermill stands on its bank . The valley of the valley ends at Zachariae .
Less than a kilometer southeast of Demmin train station , the Augraben flows into the Tollense. From this point only a short distance (2.7 river kilometers) the Tollense itself flows into the Peene .
ecology
Since 2010, old weirs and barrages have been replaced by long, flat fish ladders with EU funds . For fish and crabs, these have so far been almost insurmountable artificial obstacles. The river has remained unsurfaced for almost the entire course. So its natural character was preserved. Since 2008, a few beavers have settled in the upper reaches , and they continue to spread. Because they are undisturbed in some areas, they will gradually dammed and widen the river there.
In its lower reaches, the excavation is part of the FFH area Tollensetal with tributaries .
history
For many centuries the Augraben in its area of origin near Ivenack was also the border river between Mecklenburg and the Prussian province of Pomerania .
