history

Emergence

The plan to build a new district vocational school went back to 1960. This was followed by countless discussions between the school authorities of the city and district of Offenbach, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the employers' association of the leather goods industry, in which a reorganization of the distribution of professional groups between the two school authorities (city and district of Offenbach) was determined. The actual background to the construction of a new district vocational school was, on the one hand, that the Offenbach district had to pay substantial guest school fees to the city of Offenbach, as many vocational students from the district attended the commercial vocational school of the city of Offenbach (today commercial-technical schools of the city of Offenbach am Main). On the other hand, the vocational school was not able to accommodate all students, so that other schools in the city area had to be used as alternative teaching facilities. The question was whether the vocational school would be expanded or the Offenbach district would build its own school. On March 22nd, 1961, the Offenbach district council passed the fundamental resolution to build a vocational school in Offenbach am Main. The Offenbach district bought a 17,000 m² site in the Lauterborn area from the city of Offenbach. The spatial plan was approved on March 27, 1963 by the Hessian Minister for Education and Popular Education. On June 8, 1965, construction of the district vocational school began. Preliminary work and site management were the responsibility of the Offenbach district building authority under the direction of site director Wilhelm Wöhrn. The architecture firm Alex Weber from Neu-Isenburg was responsible for the design and construction management. Huta-Bau-AG and Appel & Zahn AG, both from Frankfurt am Main, built the building. The class and administration wing was built in the conventional way, the workshop wing and the auditorium in prefabricated construction. Lessons began on Monday, October 30, 1967. From the start of lessons, the following professions were taught part-time at the part-time vocational school: Electrical specialist group (electrical mechanics, high-voltage electricians, electrical installers, radio and television technicians), leather specialist group (fine bag makers and saddlers, shoe workers, fur dressers, tanners, Stepper), main and ancillary construction jobs (draftsman, bricklayer and tiler, carpenter and carpenter, model maker, locksmith, heating engineer, plumbing installer, plumber and plumber, painter, varnisher, white binder), chemistry section (chemical and lacquer laboratory technician, chemical skilled worker). Basic training in the metal and construction sector took place in the young workers' specialist group. By resolution of the Offenbach district council, the school was named "August-Bebel-Schule", named after the German politician and publicist August Bebel . On October 10, 1968, the August Bebel School was inaugurated.

Expansion of the August Bebel School in the 1970s and 1980s

In the years that followed, the vocational school was expanded to include various full-time school types: in 1968, the two-year vocational school, which leads to a middle degree, was added for the vocational fields of metal technology and electrical engineering and the specialist area of leather-processing professions, as well as the part-time technical college, specializing in leather technology. In 1969 the part-time technical college, specializing in electrical engineering, was relocated from the Offenbach industrial vocational school to the August-Bebel-Schule. In 1970 the technical college with a focus on mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering was established. The printing technology vocational school in Hanau-Steinheim becomes a branch of the August-Bebel-Schule. This branch is also responsible for trainees in the Main-Kinzig district . In 1971 a full-time technical college for electrical engineering began. In 1978 the August-Bebel-Schule established the basic vocational training year (often abbreviated as BGJ) in full-time school form in the professional fields of electrical engineering and wood technology as well as the vocational preparation year (often abbreviated as BVJ). The basic vocational training year was also introduced in 1980 in the fields of electrical engineering and printing technology.

Between 1980 and 1983 the main office of the August-Bebel-Schule in Offenbach was expanded: the former building yard was built over and workshops for carpenters, painters and plumbers were built there.

After a three-year construction phase, the extension was put into operation in 1983.

Other types of school were introduced by 1990:

  • Technical college with a focus on design (from 1985)
  • Technical college with a focus on data processing technology (from 1985)
  • Establishment of a vocational school for information processing, specializing in technology, which builds on an intermediate degree. Today it is called the Higher Vocational School (from 1988)

Expansion of the August Bebel School in the 1990s

From 1991, the technical college can also be attended with a focus on information technology (IT). In 1994, a newly built 3-field hall for physical education at the August-Bebel-Schule was inaugurated on a property next to the school. As a result, the range of sports on offer at the school can be significantly expanded. The sports clubs also benefit to this day from using the hall in the evenings.

In 1996, two other types of school were added at the ABS:

  • Technical college specializing in electrical engineering with a focus on building technology
  • Two-year vocational school leading to an intermediate degree in the professional field of wood technology

Expansion of the August Bebel School from the year 2000

In 2001, the vocational high school was introduced at the August-Bebel-Schule, specializing in technology, with a focus on design and media technology. This focus did not previously exist in Hessen . For this reason, contacts were established with the vocational high schools in Baden-Württemberg in order to orientate oneself on the curricula and teaching content there. On this basis, the August Bebel School wrote the curriculum for the focus on design and media technology in Hesse, the focus was carried out as a pilot test and, after many experience reports, converted into the standard form. Since then, other vocational schools with this focus have also been guided by these guidelines. For the first central high school diploma in Hesse in 2007, the August-Bebel-Schule played a leading role in the commission for the preparation of central examination tasks for the focus on design and media technology.

In 2005 the August-Bebel-Schule was selected together with 16 other vocational schools for the SV-Plus pilot project. The model project "Self-responsibility plus" of the state of Hesse is the forerunner for the establishment of the self-responsible vocational school (SBS). As part of an accompanied transfer process, the August Bebel School became an independent vocational school on January 1, 2012.

In 2008, the vocational school of the August-Bebel-Schule was expanded to include color technology and interior design. In 2009, part of the classrooms at the Offenbach location was renovated. For a year the lessons were moved to containers and all rooms were brought up to date with the latest technology. Since the restart, all classrooms have been equipped with electronic boards . A modern media library for teachers and students has been operated all day since then. In addition, a counseling center with social workers and a psychologist has been set up since then.

For the 2009/2010 school year, the new subject of design and media technology (GMTA) was introduced at the higher vocational school in Hesse in cooperation with the Butzbach vocational and technical school and today's Arnold-Bode-Schule Kassel . The first class started at the August-Bebel-Schule in the 2009/2010 school year. For the 2011/2012 school year, the subject of design was introduced in the existing technical college of the August-Bebel-Schule. For the 2013/2014 school year, in cooperation with the associations and the Heinrich Schmid company, trainees as painters and varnishers specializing in “design and maintenance” were taught for the first time in the specialization “finishing technology and surface design”.
