August Johann Georg Karl Batsch (born October 28, 1761 in Jena ; † September 29, 1802 there ) was a German botanist , doctor and writer. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Batsch ".

Live and act

Batsch, who was taught in the city school and later had private lessons, showed an early inclination towards the natural sciences, especially botany. In 1772 he began studying medicine and natural history at the University of Jena , where he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate. From 1782 to 1783 he worked as a private lecturer in botany and zoology at the University of Jena and from 1784 to 1786 he was administrator of the Count's Reuss-Plauian natural history collection in Köstritz.

1786 he received his doctorate at Justus Christian Loder Dr. med. In 1788 he became an associate professor (especially for botany and chemistry ) and in 1792 full professor for natural history at the medical faculty. In 1793 he founded the Natural Research Society in Jena . In 1794 he founded the Botanical Garden in Jena and took over its management as director. Batsch also advised Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on botanical issues.

In his work Elenchus fungorum… , which comprises three volumes, around 200 species of mushrooms are described and shown on colored panels. Since the location information is often very precise, the work is not only important for the mushroom system, but also for the floristry of the mushrooms .

Under the name 'Ritter a Tribus rosis' he was a member of the Masonic obedience of the Strict Observance . He had also joined the Illuminati Order under the name of the order 'Flavianus' or 'Florian' and became secretary of the Minerval Church in Weimar ; 1783 ' Presbyter '.

Taxonomic honor

A newly discovered genus of plants from the legume family (Fabaceae) was named Batschia in his honor . Wilhelm Zopf named the brown acorn cup ( Ciboria batschiana ) after Batsch.
