August Kruger

Georg Theodor August Krüger (born February 11, 1793 in Braunschweig ; † October 4, 1873 ibid) was a German classical philologist , teacher, headmaster and author.

Life

Krüger was the son of the postal secretary Gerhard Heinrich Julius Krüger and his wife Katharina Wilhelmine, geb. Ground. He attended the Martino-Katharineum in his hometown. In April 1810, Krüger went to Göttingen and studied theology and philology there . After completing his studies, he took up his first position in Clausthal on November 14, 1813 as a second pastor and as a so-called “collaborator” at the local grammar school. As early as 1815 he was appointed deputy principal of the high school in Wolfenbüttel , today's large school . In 1828 Krüger was appointed director of his old school, the Braunschweiger Martino-Katharineum, which had just been converted into an upper and comprehensive high school. There he succeeded Friedrich Traugott Friedemann . He held this position for almost 40 years from 1828 until his retirement in 1866.

Shortly after moving to Braunschweig, he was given the title of "Professor". In 1837 he was appointed honorary doctor of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Göttingen . In his function as a founding member of the “Commission for the Examination of Candidates for the Higher Education Authority” set up by law on December 20, 1837, Krüger had a significant influence on the development of school policy in the Duchy of Braunschweig . On November 14, 1863, on the occasion of the celebration of his 50th anniversary in office, Krüger was appointed high school councilor and the University of Göttingen awarded him an honorary doctorate in theology. He retired at Easter 1866 .

Krüger was the author of numerous works, including Latin grammars, but also books on poets such as Horace , theological and philosophical works and those on school policy of his time.

Kruger was married three times. The wedding with his first wife, Dorette Schütze († July 9, 1828) from Wolfenbüttel, took place on January 8, 1822. In his second marriage, on March 8, 1831, he married Elisabeth "Betti" Witting (1803-1840), a daughter of the Brunswick businessman Ernst Franz Witting , the founder of the EF Witting fashion house . After her death on May 30, 1840, Krüger married for the last time on June 6, 1843: This time the Brunswick merchant's daughter Luise Krägelius, who survived him († July 22, 1884).
