Pasture area with Heck cattle
In the Aurach Valley between Kolmsdorf and Feigendorf , a larger area has been grazed with Heck cattle all year round since 2006. The animals should take over the ecological function of the extinct aurochs and preserve and create species-rich habitats. The name of the Aurach is derived from the aurochs, which was part of the local fauna until the Middle Ages. In the future, water buffalos will also graze in the Aurach Valley, as they also eat reeds, unlike the Heck cattle.
Flora and fauna
n 1971 the association succeeded in leasing the approx. 4.4 km long stretch of water from the bridge in Höfen, through Schadlos and Neuhaus to the point where it flows into the Regnitz. In this course, the stream, which is often densely overgrown at the edge, is on average 2-3m wide and 50cm-1.5m deep. The main fish in this course is the trout, which thrives splendidly thanks to the good water quality, the high food supply and good hiding places. Complete the biodiversity, eel , chub , perch , char and many different species of white fish, but also pike , catfish and burbot feel quite comfortable in this small stream and are caught again and again.
