The Aurelia in Genoa, April 2011

The Aurelia is a RoRo - car and passenger ferry to the Italian shipping company Tirrenia di Navigazione . Her home port is Cagliari , her IMO number 7602120. She belongs to a class of six ships that were built from 1979 to 1981 for the Tirrenia di Navigazione and named after Roman consular streets.

Construction, modifications and technical data

The Aurelia ran on 24 November 1979 to the shipyard of Fincantieri in Castellammare with the hull number 4351 from the stack and was on the line between the 20 November 1980 Genoa , Palermo and Torres Porto put into service. She was 136 meters long and 23.04 m wide, had a draft of 6.02 m and was measured at 9,485  GRT . It could carry around 1,000 passengers (568 of them in cabins) and 470  cars . Two marine diesel engines of the type GMT A420.16 from Grandi Motori Trieste with a total of 19,200  kW allowed a top speed of 19.5  knots .

Due to the rapid increase in ferry traffic to and from Sardinia in the summer months, Tirrenia decided in 1986 to enlarge all six ships of the class. In the winter of 1986/87 the Aurelia was lengthened to a total of 147.99 m and widened to 25.4 m at the Fincantieri shipyard in Trieste by installing a 12 m long intermediate piece amidships. At the same time another deck was put on. This increased the measurement to 12,523 GRT and the transport capacity to around 2,000 passengers and 610 cars. In the summer of 1987 the ship was back in service.

At the beginning of 1992, the Aurelia and her sister ships Clodia and Nomentana were significantly rebuilt once more at the Industrie Navali Meccaniche Affini SpA ( INMA ) shipyard in La Spezia , where they were each raised by two more decks and equipped with side bulges to improve their stability. This second conversion increased the draft to 6.1 m, the gross tonnage to 14,384 GT and the loading capacity to a maximum of 2,280 passengers and 650 cars, but at the same time reduced the speed to around 17 knots. The maneuverability also decreased because of the considerably larger side surface exposed to the wind. The Aurelia was back in service as early as May 1992 .

In the winter of 2002/03, the Aurelia at Fincantieri in Palermo underwent an interior renovation in order to bring it into line with the hotel standard of the rest of the Tirrenia fleet. All cabins on the top deck have been converted to first class en suite cabins and the bar on deck 11 has been removed to make room for more cabins. The Aurelia 's facilities today include a reception, bar, cinema, restaurant, cafeteria , 295 first-class cabins and 119 second-class cabins with a total of 1,360 beds, and two escalators .

The ship has 11 decks:

  • 1: machine system
  • 2 (Copertino) : car deck, and 119 second class cabins
  • 3 (Principale) : car deck
  • 4 (Piattaforma) : car deck
  • 5 (Superiore) : Car deck
  • 6 (Coperta) : Car deck, and 48 first class cabins
  • 7 (Saloni) : reception, bar, cinema, restaurant, cafeteria, video game room , 41 first class cabins
  • 8 (Imbarcazioni) : common rooms, first aid
  • 9 (Comando) : 83 first class cabins
  • 10 (Aurora) : 87 first class cabins
  • 11 (Belvedere) : 36 first class cabins, sun deck

service

The Aurelia was used over the years on several lines of the Tirrenia, but mostly she drove on the routes Porto Torres - Genoa , Olbia - Civitavecchia and Cagliari - Civitavecchia , from 2006 also Bari - Durrës . It currently serves the route Civitavecchia - Arbatax - Cagliari.

After the fire on the Vincenzo Florio ferry off Palermo on May 29, 2009, the shipping company planned to use the Aurelia in place of the Florio on the Naples – Palermo route, but the necessary safety check revealed numerous deficiencies in important safety and navigation systems prevented another mission. The Aurelia was then replaced by the Janas and only put back into service after the weak points had been rectified.

Ships of the class

Sister ships are the Domiziana (1978), the Clodia (1979), the Nomentana (1979), the Adriatica (ex Emilia , 1979) and the Flaminia (1980).

In 1992, in addition to the Aurelia , the Clodia and the Nomentana were raised by two additional decks at INMA in La Spezia and equipped with side bulges to improve their stability. The three other sister ships, Domiziana , Adriatica and Flaminia , were not rebuilt again and therefore have a very different appearance today than the other three ships in the class.

The interior renovation carried out on the Aurelia in 2002/03 was then also carried out on the Clodia and the Nomentana . The Clodia returned to the fleet in June 2003, the Nomentana in June 2004 after these modifications.
