Awtandil Koridze ( Georgian ავთანდილ ქორიძე ; born April 15, 1935 in Tbilisi , † April 11, 1966 in Terdschola , Imeretia ) was a Soviet wrestler of Georgian descent. He was an Olympic champion in 1960 in the lightweight, Greco-Roman style.

Career

Awtandil Koridze began wrestling as a teenager in Tbilisi. He quickly developed into an excellent wrestler in Greco-Roman. Style. In 1957 he finished second in the Soviet championship in the lightweight category behind Nikolai Rosin and ahead of Fedor Jowitsch, and in the same year he won the lightweight tournament at the III. International sports games in Moscow . In 1958, he took 3rd place in the Soviet championship behind Viktor Wasin and Ivan Korschunow. At the major international tournament in Split in 1959 , where the entire world elite competed, Awtandil won the lightweight ahead of Rıza Doğan from Turkey and Imre Polyák from Hungary .

In 1960 he finished second in the Soviet lightweight championship behind Ivan Korschunow, but was still nominated for the Olympic Games in Rome . Awtandil Koridse justified this trust, because he became the lightweight Olympic champion with five wins and one draw against the 1956 Olympic champion Kyösti Lehtonen from Finland .

On November 1, 1960 he won in Kiev in an international match against the Federal Republic of Germany over Gottlieb Neumair from Munich- Neuaubing on points.

In 1961 he added the world champion title to the Olympic victory in Yokohama . Four victories were enough for him.

Awtandil Koridze was no longer at the start at other international championships. He devoted himself to his sports teacher studies and was then a trainer in Tbilisi. In 1966, he and his fellow wrestler Roman Dsneladze died in a traffic accident in their own car while driving to training.
