Axel Bäck (born December 23, 1987 in Brussels , Belgium ) is a former Swedish ski racer . He specialized in the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom .

biography

Bäck contested his first FIS race in May 2003. During the next two years he took part in these races exclusively in Sweden and was once among the top ten. His first victory was on December 11, 2005 in the Geilo slalom in Norway and a month later he was Swedish junior slalom champion. In February 2006, Bäck took part in his first two European Cup slaloms, but did not get into the points. In March he finished 43rd in the downhill at the Junior World Championships in 2006 , but failed in all other competitions.

In the 2006/07 season, Bäck remained without points in the European Cup, in FIS races he won the Funäsdalen slalom on December 16. At the 2007 Junior World Championships he was 29th in the giant slalom and 53rd in the Super-G. In the slalom and downhill he did not finish. On December 2, 2007, Bäck achieved his first result in the points in the European Cup with 19th place in the Åre slalom . In the further course of the season he was no longer in the top 30. In FIS races he managed again only one victory in the 2007/08 season, but in the next winter he was able to decide eight FIS races for themselves. In the European Cup, the Swede drove into the points twice in the 2008/09 season.

On January 27, 2009, Bäck competed in a World Cup race for the first time in the night slalom on the Planai in Schladming , but he was canceled in the first round. In his second World Cup race, the slalom in Levi on November 15, 2009, after finishing 28th in the first run with the third-fastest time in the second round, he reached 15th place and thus won his first World Cup points. Two days later he finished second in the indoor slalom in Wittenburg for the first time in the European Cup. With another three second places he also achieved second place in the EC slalom ranking in 2009/10 . His first top 10 placement in the World Cup came on December 21, 2009 in the slalom on the Gran Risa in Alta Badia when he finished tenth. Bäck took part in the slalom at the 2010 Winter Olympics, but retired after a goal error in the second round.

At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Bäck and the Swedish team won the bronze medal in the team competition without having run a run themselves. In the World Championship slalom he was eleventh. In the 2010/11 season he achieved his best result in the 2010/11 season with sixth place in Schladming, before his first podium finish in a World Cup race on March 6, 2011 with second place in the Kranjska Gora slalom (at the same time as Nolan Kasper ) succeeded. He finished his strongest season to date as 14th in the Slalom World Cup. There have been no other top positions so far. In the 2011/12 season, Bäck finished in the top 15 six times, but never in the top ten in any race, and fell back ten places in the Slalom World Cup. The next top 10 result after his first podium was only achieved in January 2013 when he finished ninth in the Lauberhorn slalom in Wengen .

In April 2016, Bäck announced the end of his career.
