Ayaka Kikuchi ( Japanese 菊池 彩 花 , Kikuchi Ayaka ; born June 28, 1987 in Minamiaiki , Nagano ) is a Japanese speed skater .

Career

Kikuchi made his World Cup debut at the beginning of the 2010/11 season in Heerenveen . There she took 19th place over 3000 m and seventh place over 1500 m in Division B. At the individual distance Asian Championships 2011 in Harbin , she won the bronze medal over 5000 m and 3000 m. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season she reached Calgary with second place in the team pursuit, her first podium in the World Cup. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , she achieved 31st place over 1500 m and fourth place in the team pursuit. At the World Cup final in Berlin she came back on the podium with third place in the team pursuit. In the 2014/15 season she finished second at the World Cup in Obihiro and third in the team pursuit in Berlin. At the 2015 World Individual Distance Championships in Heerenveen, she won the gold medal in the team pursuit. In the 2015/16 season she came in over 1500 m with five top ten placements and came tenth in the World Cup over 1500 m. In addition, she was second in the team pursuit in Calgary and won her first World Cup victory in the team pursuit in Heerenveen. In the 2017/18 season she won the team pursuit in Calgary and Minsk . At the season highlight, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she won the gold medal in the team pursuit. In the individual races she achieved 19th place over 3000 m and 16th place over 1500 m. In March 2018 she was seventh at the all- around world championships in Amsterdam .

Kikuchi was Japanese champion in the all-around in 2010 and in the 1500 m in 2014. At the Japanese Championships in Nagano in 2016 , she won over 1000 m, 3000 m and four-way combat.

Kikuchi is the sister of Moemi , Yuki and Sumire , who are all active on the short track .
