Maasbree ( listen ? / I ) is a place and a former municipality in the Dutch province of Limburg . In addition to Maasbree, where the municipal administration was located, there is a second district with Baarlo. Both villages are about the same size. On January 1st 2010 Maasbree merged with Helden , Kessel and Meijel to form the new municipality Peel en Maas . Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

Baarlo is located on the western bank of the Maas , only 6.5 kilometers south of the Blerick district of Venlo . Maasbree is about 4 km north-west of Baarlo (A73 Venlo- Eindhoven , exit 38 Helden, distance 7 km). The next train station is in Blerick. The Fietsallee cycle path on the North Canal runs through the village.

The population lives mainly from agriculture and horticulture.

history

Maasbree was first mentioned as Bree in 1240.

The name of the village Baarlo is said to be derived from bar = bare, uncultivated and lo = forest used by humans.

Both places belonged to the Duchy of Geldern from the late Middle Ages , and later, after the War of the Spanish Succession in 1702, until the Congress of Vienna in 1814 to the Kingdom of Prussia .
