The Limburg (Lahn) Station is a train station in the center of Limburg an der Lahn .
Geographical location
The train station is on the Lahn Valley Railway , which runs from Koblenz to Wetzlar and on to Gießen .
At the western end of the station, a double-track branch line branches off in the direction of Staffel , which branches there into two single-track lines to Siershahn ( Unterwesterwaldbahn ) and to Altenkirchen (Westerw) ( Oberwesterwaldbahn ). To the east of Limburg, the two-track, electrified Main-Lahn-Bahn branches off at Eschhofen station to the southeast in the direction of Frankfurt (Main) Hbf .
history
The historic station building from 1862 was built on an H-shaped floor plan in the arched style. The traufständige middle section was two storeys, the laterally arranged, gabled wing three storeys. It was rebuilt before the Second World War and expanded with glass additions. During this renovation, the waiting hall was clad with Lahn marble . It was damaged by air raids during World War II and demolished in the 1950s. The current station building was opened for operation on September 28, 1961.
In Limburg one - to 2002 - immediately adjacent to the station repair shop of Deutsche Bahn resident. It was west of the reception building on the north side of the track field.
Limburg depot
At the western exit of the station, to the southwest of the repair shop, was the Limburg depot. The Limburg depot was best known for its home to battery-powered railcars of the ETA 150 and ETA 176 series , the latter only being stationed in Limburg and also called Limburg cigars because of their round vehicle front .
In 1985 the depot was still completely in place: with a 23-meter turntable (turntable 1) and a 20-meter turntable (turntable 2), associated locomotive sheds with 20 or 12 tracks each , a small canteen , one Engine line and a water tower .
In 1991 the depot was assigned to the Gießen depot as a branch office and thus lost its independence.
In 1994 locomotive shed 1 was demolished. The tracks were left, only the locomotive shed tracks were dismantled. The locomotive shed at turntable 2 was closed in 1998 due to disrepair, so that the class 216 locomotives parked there were always standing in front of the shed. At the end of 1998, turntable 1 was removed and some tracks were dismantled. The last beam tracks on turntable 1 were removed in 2001. Class 216 locomotives were still parked at turntable 2. In 2002 turntable 2 was shut down. At the beginning of 2002 the new diesel filling station was built in front of turntable 2. Only in autumn / winter 2004 was a company commissioned to rehabilitate the soil and remove the contaminated sites.
At the beginning of 2007 the engine shed at turntable 2 was demolished by the recycling company Schuy, which bought the site in 2005. The turntable, which was no longer connected to the rail network, was dismantled by 2009. The area served as a storage area for the Schuy company garbage containers.

The trains in the direction of Frankfurt (Main) Hbf and the RE trains to Koblenz Hbf and Gießen are operated by DB Regio . The trains in the direction of Wiesbaden Hbf, Au (Sieg) and Siershahn are operated by the Hessische Landesbahn (HLB). The RB line Koblenz Hbf - Gießen is broken in Limburg. The DB Regio runs from Mayen Ost / Koblenz Hbf to Limburg (Lahn), and the Hessische Landesbahn (RB 45) from Limburg (Lahn) to Gießen. There is a seamless connection in both directions. The line RB 25 was extended to the timetable change in 2014 via Andernach to Mayen Ost, today this line operates under the new line number RB 23 and the name Lahn-Eifel-Bahn .
As part of the planned reactivation of the Aartalbahn for regional rail transport , the trains of the RB Aar of the DB Regio should connect Limburg and Hahnstätten via Diez every hour from 2018 . This would also create additional connections between Limburg and Diez. A realization is currently uncertain.
Connection to the Limburg Süd long-distance train station
During the construction of the high-speed line Cologne – Rhine / Main , a rail connection between the regional train station Limburg (Lahn) and the train station Limburg Süd was dispensed with. Buses on line 5 (Limburg ZOB - Südbahnhof) and individual trips on lines 59 and 282, which depart from the south side of the station, connect both stations with each other.
