history
railway station
The Ottoman Railway Company (ORC), founded by English investors in 1856, opened up the fertile hinterland of Izmir with railway lines from 1860 and built Alsancak station as the end point, which connected the district town of Torbalı with Izmir from 1860 . North of Izmir there was also a desire for traffic development and improvement of the connections to Constantinople . For this purpose, on July 4, 1863, the Chemin de fer de Smyrne-Cassaba et Prolongements (SCR) received the concession to build a line from Izmir to Cassaba (Ottoman: Kasaba, today Turgutlu ). The company, which is also supported by English investors, decided to build its own train station near the city center, independent of the OCR train station. Construction began in 1864 and was completed in 1866. Basmane station was inaugurated on October 25, 1866. Due to the location of the route networks of the SCR and ORC, there has been a level crossing of the routes from them east of the two terminal stations. Both stations are connected with each other via connecting curves.
The SCR used the building for passenger and freight transport. For this purpose, a goods handling facility had been built in the back of the station. During the First World War , the station and railway company were placed under the military control of the Ottoman Empire. After the war and the founding of the Republic of Turkey, the SCR took over the station and route network again in its own administration, until 1934 the Turkish Railway Company TCDD was founded and the SCR was absorbed. In 2001 the tracks were electrified but not used. From 2006 the station was renovated and passenger traffic was discontinued until 2009.

The metro station is on the Fahrettin Altay — Evka 3 line on the Izmir Metro . It is located directly under the train station and is only accessible via this. Basmane was one of the first metro stations in the city. It connects intercity and regional rail transport with the city. The ESHOT buses can also be reached from here . Only Basmane offers this type of networking between local and long-distance transport.
