Swell:

The Frensdorf – Schlüsselfeld ( Obere Steigerwaldbahn ) line is a branch line in Bavaria . It branches off the Strullendorf – Ebrach railway line in Frensdorf and leads to Schlüsselfeld .

history

planning

Around 1865, the Birkner porcelain factory (formerly Gottbrecht, Wagner, founded in 1790) moved from Reichmannsdorf , in a side valley of the Reichen Ebrach , to Tettau / Alexanderhütte, because the production site in Reichmannsdorf was insufficiently connected to the traffic routes. By 1886, under the chairmanship of the pharmacist Barthel from Burghaslach, a railway committee had been founded, which advocated the establishment of a local railway to develop the Reichen Ebrachgrund. After many discussions about the routing of a planned “Steigerwaldbahn” (including Erlangen - Höchstadt / Aisch – Geiselwind but also Frensdorf - Höchstadt / Aisch), the costing for a “local train from Hirschaid to Geiselwind” was finally carried out. There were plans to extend the route from Ebrach via Gerolzhofen ( Kitzingen - Schweinfurt railway ) to Volkach ( Mainschleifenbahn ).

The route from Schlüsselfeld to Geiselwind was never considered in detail, and the technical description only covers Hirschaid to Schlüsselfeld. On September 26, 1887, the chairman of the railway committee, Barthel, wrote that “55,000 marks for land acquisition costs for the rich Ebrachtalbahn in the district of Höchstadt / A. are upset ”. By 1889 it was so far that a railway line through the valley of the Rauhen Ebrach from Bamberg via Frensdorf to Ebrach and a wing railway Frensdorf - Schlüsselfeld were within reach. On February 21, 1896, the construction of the Strullendorf - Schlüsselfeld line was unanimously approved by the Bavarian State Parliament. The Frensdorf - Ebrach line followed later.

Opening and operation

The first test drive from Strullendorf to Steppach was carried out on December 9, 1899, and traffic began on December 16 of the same year. On September 22, 1900, a test drive took place on the Steppach – Schlüsselfeld section. One week later, on September 29, 1900, passenger traffic began. On this day the stagecoach drove for the last time in the valley of the rich Ebrach.

For the construction of the federal motorway 3 between the Tennenlohe junction and the Biebelried junction, a multi-track ceiling construction station was built around 1960 immediately northeast of the Schlüsselfeld station . It served to transport mineral building materials such as gravel, sand and grit as well as bitumen and fuels. The building materials delivered in block trains were prepared on site in large mixing plants and transported over long conveyor belts to the motorway construction site, where Lorenbahnen took over the further distribution. The highest transport volume was recorded in 1963 when 668,065 tons of goods were delivered. After the opening of the motorway section, the ceiling construction station was dismantled.

Passenger traffic to Schlüsselfeld was discontinued on May 21, 1977, freight traffic continues. Currently, only the Schlüsselfeld station is a freight tariff point (NSFD). Steel wire is received from all over Europe, and wood from the state and city forests is sent. In recent years, special trips by various railway associations have taken place on the Steigerwaldbahnen route network. The Steigerwaldbahnen working group of the Reicher Ebrachgrund home association, now IG Steigerwaldbahn in Schlüsselfeld, which offers special passenger transport every year, also tried to maintain the line. The Schlüsselfeld train station, whose preservation is assured, was renovated in 2016.

Dismantling

The dismantling of sidings began in 1977 because of the decline in freight traffic in the en-route stations. In spite of the dismantled and shortened sidings, almost all switch connections are still available today. The freight therefore limited to the route end point key field, especially the use of a metal processing company with wire rolls (currently weekdays) takes place - which would have to move the location at a distance decommissioning. DB Cargo currently no longer transports timber.

The metalworking company from Schlüsselfeld received a service guarantee up to 2003 with an extension option from the former Deutsche Bundesbahn . However, the legal successor, Deutsche Bahn AG , did not adhere to it and wanted to shut down the route or give it to another railway infrastructure company because of the non-cost-covering operation . Since this procedure dragged on for several years, the route had to be closed several times, the last time being from November 7th, 2007 to February 3rd, 2008. The metal construction company in Schlüsselfeld was served on the road during this time. On November 28, 2007, the Bavarian Regional Railway (BRE), a subsidiary of the German Regional Railway (DRE), took over the route. Because of the costs of the route rehabilitation, however, there was a dispute with DB Netz AG , which was only resolved when the Bamberg district granted an investment grant. The district wants to keep the route under all circumstances and sees this "under the aspect of economic development". On May 8, 2008, the line was put back into operation after being upgraded by BRE. On November 7, 2012, the line was closed by the Northern Bavarian State Railway Inspectorate after a route inspection due to defects in the track system, bridge structures and level crossings . Then the BRE carried out repair measures. While a RAILab measuring train was traveling on January 8, 2013, defects were found that could only be rectified after eight months. On July 8, 2013, the first freight train with wire rolls was able to travel to Schlüsselfeld again.

Routing

At the western end of the Frensdorf train station, the route runs in a wide left-hand bend to the south, then leads almost three kilometers through forests and fields, after a wide right-hand bend at Lonnershof approaches state road 2260 from the north and follows it to Schlüsselfeld, only about eleven kilometers in a south-westerly direction to shortly after Mühlhausen / Upper Franconia, from there about seven kilometers west to about two kilometers before Schlüsselfeld. There it bends to the northwest and reaches Schlüsselfeld. To the north-west of the station is a metal processing company, the last customer on the railway line.

Vehicle use

Steam locomotives of the D XI series were first used on vehicles , followed by the 98.8 and 98.11 series. The ETA 180, VT 98 and V 80 followed later with three-axle conversion cars . From 1977 the series 211 , 260 , 218 and 290 operated in freight traffic . But other vehicles also came onto the route, V 36 and “Der General” during a US maneuver, V 60/61 during the time of the overhead station in Schlüsselfeld.

The freight trains are currently hauled by locomotives of the 294 series from DB Cargo .
