Bak is a Hungarian community in the county Zalaegerszeg in Zala county .

geography

Bak extends over an area of ​​23.05 km². The place is in the Zala hill country 40 km west of Keszthely and Lake Balaton .

history

It was first mentioned in writing in 1239. In 1269, King Béla IV gave Bak to the Pannonhalma Abbey . Later the place came into the possession of the Zalavár Abbey and got market rights in 1400. In 1421 a nationwide market was held. In the 16th and early 17th centuries, the place was often devastated by the Turks, which led to depopulation.

In 1690 the place came into the possession of the Széchenyi family . In the 18th century Bak was just a simple village. In the 1820s, István Széchenyi modernized agriculture, and in 1839 Bak burned down. The railway connection came in 1898, the connection to the road network in 1900 and from 1935 on Bak was served by buses.

In the Second World War, many soldiers from Bak fell and Jews were deported to extermination camps.

In 1988 a 3.2 km diameter crater on Mars was named after the location.
