Egervár Castle
The part of the name vár means castle or fortress in Hungarian and refers to the castle, which gives the place its character. In the 13th century, after the Mongol storm of 1241, a border fortress was built at this point, the so-called Ritterberg. As a result, a castle fort was built, which was given its present form during the Renaissance - between 1539 and 1569. The castle was conquered by the Turks in the 17th century and set on fire by them in 1664. In 1676 it came under the rule of the Széchenyis , who had it rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1712/13 and added court arcades in the Baroque style. The castle was owned by the Nádasdy family for a long time , is now owned by the Hungarian state and is called Nádasdy-Szécheny Castle of Egervár . It was completely renovated at the beginning of the 21st century with the help of EU regional funds and can be visited. In the south-eastern tower room an exhibition reports on the history of the castle. In 2015, 23,000 visitors were recorded. The castle also houses a guest house.
The castle courtyard has been used for theater performances and concerts since the mid-1970s - under the title Egervári Esték , Evenings on Egervár. The infrastructure was gradually expanded, and the auditorium has been roofed over with a tent since 2000. The courtyard can accommodate 450 spectators.
church
Egervár has a single-nave church (parish church of St. Catherine) from the late Gothic period . The construction began on the instructions of László Egervári in 1475 and continued until 1511. The church, long under the aegis of the Franciscans , has a square tower on the north side of the choir. The length of the nave is more than 40 meters. The church was badly damaged during the Turkish occupation. In 1758 it was redesigned in baroque style. Extensive renovations took place in the 1970s and 1990s.
Stumbling blocks
In 2017 the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig laid three stumbling blocks in memory of the Gottlieb family who were murdered in Auschwitz.
