Baldassare Cenci , also Baldassarre Cenci (born November 1, 1710 in Rome , † March 2, 1763 in Nettuno ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the fifth of seven children of Tiberio Cenci and his wife Eleonora (Maddalena) Costaguti. On the maternal side, his great-grand-uncles Vincenzo Costaguti and Giovanni Battista Costaguti were also cardinals, as was his paternal uncle, Baldassare Cenci , whose name he bore. Other cardinals from the old and respected family of the Cenci were Tiberio Cenci and Serafino Cenci . Baldassare Cenci began studying at the Pontifical Academy for the Ecclesiastical Nobility in 1727 and graduated with the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque . He became canon of the Vatican Basilica and on August 20, 1730 papal chamber of honor. In 1734 he was the papal delegate with the task of delivering the red biretta to Cardinal Serafino Cenci, the Archbishop of Benevento . On August 2, 1735, Baldassare Cenci was trainee lawyer at the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signature and House Prelate of His Holiness . From September 13, 1737 to June 1739 he was governor of the city of Benevento . After returning to Rome in 1739, he was appointed relator of the Sacra Consulta in place of Alberico Archinto , who had been appointed nuncio in Tuscany, a position he held until 1742. In January 1742 he became an auditor of the Apostolic Signature . In September 1753 he became an employee of the auditor of the Apostolic Chamber , which he remained for eight years, and on November 26, 1753 also secretary of the Congregation of the Holy Consulta.

Pope Clement XIII. created him in the consistory of November 23, 1761 as cardinal priest . The cardinal's hat he received on 26 November of that year, and on January 25, 1762, he was Santa Maria in Aracoeli as a titular church awarded. He was a member of the Council Congregation , the Index Congregation and the Congregation for the Dombauhütte of St. Peter . Clemens XIII also appointed him. as delegate and general agent for the draining of the Pontine Marshes . As part of this commission, he traveled to Sezze , Piperno and nearby places in December 1762 . At the end of February 1763 he came to Nettuno, where Cardinal Neri Corsini, his friend and former sponsor, owned a country house. On the evening of March 1, 1763, apparently in the best of health, he retired to sleep. The next morning he was found dead.

He had died of a stroke in the morning of March 2, 1763 in Nettuno . First he was buried in the church of Nettuno. On February 16, 1764 his body was transferred to Rome and buried there in his titular church, Santa Maria in Aracoeli . Cardinal Cenci left his family in debts of 22,000 scudi and the fifteen months of his cardinalate had resulted in nothing but an immense loss of property for the family.
