Balsam Lake is located in northwest Wisconsin on the west bank of the Balsam Lake of the same name . The approximately 15 km west running Wisconsin- Minnesota border is formed by the St. Croix River , a left tributary of the Mississippi .

history

The area around the city was formerly inhabited by a large subdivision of the local Indians from the Ojibwa tribe. They called the region "Innenehinduc" which means "evergreen place". This name was probably chosen because of the Canadian yew tree , a large evergreen shrub that grows there .
