Balthasar Balduin

Balthasar Balduin (born February 5, 1605 in Dresden , † April 29, 1652 in Regensburg ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Balthasar was born the son of the theologian Friedrich Balduin and his first wife Dorothea Meissner. He attended the Wittenberg city school and moved into the University of Wittenberg . Here he first completed studies at the Philosophical Faculty. At that time in Wittenberg August Buchner taught poetry, Jakob Martini taught moral philosophy, Reinhold Franckenberger taught history, Erasmus Schmidt taught Greek, Johann Avenarius taught rhetoric and Georg Wecker taught physics. In addition, the two chairs of higher mathematics were filled by Ambrosius Rhode and lower mathematics by Tobias Tilemann . With these teachers, he should have acquired sufficient knowledge, so that on March 16, 1624 he obtained the academic degree of a master's degree. After obtaining permission to read aloud at universities as a Magister legens in February 1625, he switched to theological studies at the University of Jena in the summer semester of 1626 .

In Jena, the then influential theologians Johannes Major , Johann Gerhard and Johann Himmel taught , with whom he was able to acquire some theological knowledge for his further career. In 1627 he returned to Wittenberg to continue his theological studies, among others with Paul Röber , Wilhelm Leyser and Wolfgang Franz . In 1630 the opportunity arose to apply his extensive theoretical knowledge in practice: in April 1631 he was appointed pastor to Döbeln . Here he experienced the horrors of the Thirty Years' War , which partially restricted him in the exercise of his office. This improved when he took over the position of pastor and superintendent in Chemnitz in 1636 . In order to meet the requirements of a superintendent, Balduin was promoted to the licentiate of theology at the Wittenberg University on May 8, 1638, and on August 28, 1638, he received his doctorate in the field.

In Zwickau , where he had been pastor and superintendent since 1638, the horrors of war caught up with him again. Because from 1639 there were constant new occupations of the city by imperial and Swedish troops. This only improved when, with the armistice of Kötzschenbroda in 1645, peace came to the Saxon lands. His last place of work was Regensburg in 1648 , where he also held the position of senior pastor and superintendent until his death. Here he saw the end of the Thirty Years War. When the Peace of Westphalia was concluded, he gave several sermons celebrating it.

Baldwin wrote literature on Christian edification and homiletics . Most important is the edition of a Regensburg hymn book, which has seen several editions.
