Baranyajenő ( German Jening ) is a Hungarian municipality in the district of Hegyhát in Baranya County .

geography

The municipality of Baranyajenő is located in southern Transdanubia , the country across the Danube in southern Hungary. The so-called Swabian Turkey forms an intersection in Baranyajenő, in a central location. The Dreikomitateneck is two kilometers north of the village center. Here lies the border of Baranya (Branau) with the place Baranyajenő, Tolna (Tolnau) with the place Jágónak and Somogy (Schomodei) with the place Kercseliget .

Place names

Originally the place Baranyajenő was known under the name Gyenő . Until the 19th century the place was called Jenő . Exactly at the beginning of the 20th century, i.e. on January 1st, 1901, the place name was finally changed from Jenő to Baranyajenő , as it had previously been confused with places of the same name ( Jenő ) in Hungary.

history

Baranyajenő is mentioned for the first time in 1283.

On December 1, 1944, Soviet troops marched into Baranyajenő and on December 27, 1944, by decree, ordered the deportation of all German women between the ages of 18 and 30 and all German men between the ages of 17 and 45 to forced labor in the Soviet Union.

Between 1946 and 1948 the communist Hungarian government at the time ordered the expulsion of all German-speaking citizens "who profess their German mother tongue and are of ethnic German origin" (wording of the official order at the time). Their property has been expropriated. The expulsion was based on the Yalta and Potsdam agreements , which were to determine the fate of Germany and the Germans after the Second World War.

Religions

The majority of the residents of Baranyajenős belong to the Roman Catholic Church . On the Catholic Church of Baranyajenő, consecrated in 1820 and renovated in 2003, there is a plaque with the following inscription: “For centuries the walls of this church have been witnesses to the fact that the Hungarians and the settled Swabians sang together and praised their common God in peace and love until the expulsion in 1946 and 1948, where they said goodbye to the fatherland with the Hungarian anthem. "
