Barbalha , officially Município de Barbalha , is a medium- sized town with a large municipality in the Brazilian state of Ceará in the Região Norte . It is around 575 km from the capital Fortaleza . The population on July 1, 2018 was estimated at 60,155. The inhabitants who live in the approximately 569.5 km² area (as of 2017) are called Barbalhens (Portuguese barbalhenses ). The population density in 2010 was 97 people per km², whereas the area at that time was only around 479 km². Barbalha is part of the Cariri metropolitan area . With five other locations in Ceará, it is part of the Araripe Geopark of UNESCO Global Geoparks .

The landscape and biome are mainly characterized by Cerrado , Cerradão and Caatinga .

The municipality has been divided into four districts since 2005: Barbalha (seat), Arajara , Caldas and Estrela . In the southwest, Barbalha borders on the state of Pernambuco .

The climate is tropical according to the Köppen and Geiger Aw climate classification . The average temperature is 25.5 ° C. Winters are drier than summers, with an average annual rainfall of 1058 mm.

history

The municipality is the original settlement area of ​​the indigenous Cariri (also written as Kariri ). The place was named after a person resident there, whose property became known as accommodation for drovers who brought herds of cattle from Pernambuco to the region of Chapada do Araripe in the dry season .

At the beginning of the 19th century the area was a parish ( Freguesia do Santo Antônio de Barbalha ) of the province of Ceará , the territory became the Distrito de Barbalha of the municipality of Crato in 1838 , on August 17, 1846 the actual place was founded as Vila de Barbalha and on August 30, 1876 as Cidade by hiving off from Crato to a legally independent municipality. The place officially adopted the year 1846 as the year of foundation.

In 2017, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística changed the assignment to geostatistical regions and assigned the municipality to the Região geográfica imediata Juazeiro do Norte and the Região geográfica intermediária Juazeiro do Norte .

City administration

Executive: In the 2016 local elections for Ceará, Argemiro Sampaio Neto became city prefect (mayor) for the term from 2017 to 2020, who ran for the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB). The legislature lies with a city council (Câmara Municipal) made up of 15 elected city councilors (vereadores).
