occupation

Baron Münchhausen is a German two-part film that was shot in 2012 on behalf of ARD for the Christmas program. The film combines several episodes of the stories of the noble Hieronymus Carl Friedrich von Münchhausen .

action

In a small inn, the impoverished Baron von Münchhausen tries to keep his head above water with the help of his stories. Therefore, he tells how he defended Saint Petersburg for Tsarina Katharina from the attacking Turks. During that battle he met the strongest man in the world (Vladimor) and the fastest man in the world (Hermet). To defeat the Sultan, he flies into the Turkish camp on a cannonball. Back in the Tsarina's palace, she presented him with a badge of honor.

At this point, the narrating Baron is interrupted by Constanze, who accuses him of being a liar. When Baron Hironymus tries to prove that the story is true, he notices that the badge of honor has been stolen from him. As it turns out, the escaped circus girl Frieda is the thief who also claims that Hironymus is her father. After some back and forth, the Baron, Constanze and Frieda set off for Saint Petersburg, since Munchausen wants to get rid of them there to their mother. At this point, Frieda already knew that her mother was dead.

On the way they have to endure some adventures, some of which correspond to other well-known Munchausen stories. Münchhausen has to pull itself out of the quicksand on its own fore. At the end of the first part, while trying to take a ship to Saint Petersburg, the three are captured by pirates, from whom they can escape on a cannonball.

Due to an unfortunate circumstance, Frieda and Münchhausen are separated from Constanze and land on the moon. From there, after meeting the Man in the Moon, they rappel down in Münchhausen style by untying the rope "above" and attaching it again "below". This is followed by a visit to the tsarina's secret wine cellar, where they meet Vladimor. Finally they arrive at the tsarina's court, where Frieda is kidnapped to the Orient. Since Munchausen has since met Constanze again, the two set out to save her. After some back and forth, the liberation succeeds and Vladimor, Hermet, Frieda, the Baron and Constanze travel home in a hot air balloon.

Trivia

  • The role of Frieda was cast with twins.
  • The film was actually written and shot as a three-part series of 60 minutes each, but then broadcast as a two-part series of 90 minutes.

Reviews

The reviews are mostly positive.

So writes Rainer Tittelbach :

“The two-parter 'Baron Münchhausen' is impressive and fits in perfectly with the fairytale ARD Christmas program. The cosmopolitan braggart is transferred to the microcosm of the family and - for the sake of the childish viewers - quickly purified. The dramaturgy is effective. 'Father' and 'daughter' are allowed to save each other. The mixture of winking and feeling also works really well. The cast is convincing and the trick technology has a charmingly old-fashioned flair. What more do you want?!"

Oliver Junge writes in the FAZ :

"In the successful ARD film adaptation of Münchhausen, the modern man is actually in the foreground: a show-off of stature who likes to be ruled by women."

- Oliver Junge in the FAZ

Sybille Möckel writes on RP Online :

“Director Andreas Linke provided the kitsch that was right for Christmas - including gaudy ' Pirates of the Caribbean ' costumes and a baron with human features who shed his recklessness and gives love a chance. The old-fashioned trick technique of the film made the two-part 'Baron Münchhausen' exactly what it should be: a perfect family Christmas film. "

- Sybille Möckel on RP Online

However, the Spiegel Online editorial team was critical of the film:

“Jan Josef Liefers plays the legendary liar in the ARD Christmas film 'Baron Münchhausen'. He steals from Johnny Depp for it . A travel agency was robbed for exotic cardboard backdrops. The action lulls you to sleep. And that wasn't all. "
