Basler Fashion , formerly Basler Bekleidungswerke , brand name Basler for short , is a German fashion brand for women's clothing.
Company history
Fritz and Elisabeth Basler founded their company in 1936, initially focused on the manufacture of jackets and coats for women, under the name Fritz Basler GmbH & Co. KG in the east of Berlin . In 1959 production was relocated to Lower Main in Bavaria and in 1963 to Goldbach near Aschaffenburg . It was there that the Baslers expanded their range for the first time: the Mona women's costume became a bestseller . In 1967 Horst Basler, the son of the company's founders, brought further collection items for women onto the market.
The company was family owned until 1992. In that year, MHM Mode Holding Munich , which has also owned the shoe brand Ara AG since 1990 and later a stake in the fashion brand Otto Kern , acquired Basler. The MHM and thus also Basler were taken over in 1996 by the fashion manufacturer Hucke AG from Nettelstedt . In 2002 Basler von Hucke (insolvency in 2007) was released and shortly afterwards was taken over by the Franco-German investor group Alpha Beteiligungsgesellschaft GmbH from Frankfurt. Alpha sold Basler in 2006 to the investment company Triton Partners . After a haircut of 60% in 2013, the Basler management team at the time (managing director, sales director and creative director) bought the company in a management buy-out . As of 2015, Basler was owned by the Frankfurt investment company Tempus Capital . In March 2017, Tempus Capital also took over the German fashion brand St. Emile (Josef Reis GmbH & Co. KG) from Kleinwallstadt .
The Basler target group was always women over 40 years of age. Classic costumes, blouses, skirts, trousers, jackets and coats for women made up the Basler range, which was expanded to include more fashionable elements and accessories in the later years.
In 1997 Basler opened its first own shop in Hamburg. Further shop openings followed. In 2007 a Basler boutique was opened in London on Bond Street , and in 2008 one in Paris on the Boulevard des Capucines between Opéra Garnier and Place Vendôme . Locations in Marseille and Nice followed . In the course of time, two more shops in Chichester and Epsom as well as an outlet in York were added in Great Britain, where the typical Basler customer was about ten years younger than in Germany . In addition, British department stores in the upper segment such as House of Fraser , Harrods and Beales carried the Basler collections. In Germany, Basler was listed at Galeria Kaufhof from 2000 . In 1985 Basler entered into a joint venture with the American importer Howard Aubrey to sell Basler fashion in the USA. To this end, the New York agency Isabella Co. was founded, in which Basler held 50%. In 2011 Basler took over Aubrey's American business. In the USA, Basler ran its own shops in later years, for example in Manhattan from 2011 . There were other Basler stores outside of Europe in Australia, China, Russia, Bahrain, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, for example. In 2013 there were around 80 stores worldwide; By the end of the 2010s, there were over 150 Basler boutiques, mostly run by franchisees .
In summer 2008, Basler launched the Basler Collection series in the premium segment for younger customers, which was renamed MYBC in 2009 and discontinued in 2011. In 2011 Basler took over the German sports brand Venice Beach (sold in 2015). In March 2011, Basler hired the Scotsman and former Escada head designer Brian Rennie as head of creative. Basler took part in Berlin Fashion Week from 2011 . Rennie rejuvenated the company's collections and left the company in spring 2014. He was followed by designer Ina Karkossa, who had been with Basler since 2005. In 2015 the accessories business was expanded. Gudrun Brenk was responsible for the design of the outdoor items and from mid-2017 she was the sole design manager.
The Basler Fashion Group achieved around 172 million euros in the 2009 financial year. In 2014/15 it was 137 million euros in sales with over 1,100 employees, in 2016/17 it was 108 million euros. The range was sold in over 150 stores, outlets and shops-in-shops in larger department stores around the world that ran under the Basler label and only offered items from its own brand, including 29 in Germany in its heyday - and over 1900 points of sale in 60 countries. There was a factory outlet in Aschaffenburg and several shops in factory outlet centers as well as an online shop for the German market . At the end of 2016, Basler launched the premium women's brand portray Berlin for younger customers.
On May 29, 2017, the company filed for insolvency in self-administration with the Aschaffenburg district court ; in August it became known that Basler and St.Emile would be wound up. As a result, all Basler stores worldwide were closed. Most recently, the management consisted of Rolf Boje ( CEO ), Marc Barrantes ( CFO ) and Jan Hilger ( COO ).
