The BeagleBoard is an inexpensive single - board computer based on the OMAP 3530 SoC from Texas Instruments . The hardware design is free . It can be downloaded for free, which makes it possible to make the board yourself. When it was presented in mid-2008, the BeagleBoard met with a great response in the media.

hardware

In addition to an ARM Cortex-A8 processor containing OMAP3 - System-on-a-chip and a TMS320C64x + - DSP and a graphics processor by PowerVR . The graphics are output via HDMI or S-Video . Further connections are USB , RS-232 , SD card , JTAG and stereo input and output. The board can be powered either via USB or a power supply unit with 5 V. Due to its low power consumption, it does not require any additional cooling. It has 256 MB NAND - flash memory and 256 MB of RAM (had the first revisions only 128 MB RAM). It can boot from the NAND memory, SD card, USB or the serial interface.

Available operating system distributions

Some Linux distributions have been ported to the BeagleBoard so far, including Ångström and Maemo . This also makes the BeagleBoard suitable for developing software for the Maemo-based Nokia N900 smartphone . Because OpenBSD is ported to the ARMv7 microprocessor architecture, it can be installed on the BeagleBoard xM (c4), the BeagleBone, the BeagleBone Black, the PandaBoard and the PandaBoard ES. The OpenBSD / armv7 project has existed since 2013.

xM version

A new xM version of the BeagleBoard has been available since 2010, including 512 MB RAM, 4 × USB 2.0 and an Ethernet interface.

PandaBoard

At the end of October 2010 the PandaBoard was presented. Like the BeagleBoard, it is based on an open ARM architecture, but with more modern hardware than the first version of the BeagleBoard. For example, it is equipped with a dual-core processor (OMAP4460-SoC from Texas Instruments) with 1 GHz, plus 1 GB of RAM, three video outputs (two can be used in parallel, e.g. DVI-D and HDMI) and LAN, WLAN and Bluetooth. Despite the higher performance, it is only available slightly more expensive than the original version of the BeagleBoard, but without flash memory.

BeagleBone Black

The BeagleBone Black has been available since April 23, 2013 at a price of 45 US dollars . Among other things, provides the latest revision 512 MB RAM (LP DDR3), one clocked at 1GHz Sitara AM3358 ARM Cortex-A8 from Texas Instruments, unlike its predecessor, the as compact version derived from the Beagle Board for hardware hackers BeagleBone , a micro HDMI -Connection and 4 GB eMMC flash memory on board. Ångström Linux is installed natively in the eMMC, which enables the board to be put into operation immediately. The system supports Android (rowboat), Ubuntu , Debian , openSUSE and Ångström, as well as several other operating systems such as FreeBSD , OpenBSD , QNX , and Windows Embedded .

A wide variety of expansion boards ( capes ) are available for the BeagleBone , which significantly expand its range of functions. A single cape is attached to the two-row, 46-pin expansion interface of the BeagleBone and in turn offers a corresponding interface for expansion with additional capes. A BeagleBone can be expanded with a maximum of four capes at the same time.

BeagleCore

On June 29, 2015, the BeagleCore BCM1 soldering module, about the size of a postage stamp, was announced. It combines the CPU Texas Instruments AM335x ARM Cortex A8 with 4 GB 8-bit eMMC onboard flash memory and 512 MB DDR3 RAM in a space-saving LGA module in order to be able to develop embedded systems on this basis .

BeagleBoard-X15

In 2016 the BeagleBoard-X15 appeared with the faster dual-core ARM-Cortex-A15 -SoC, 2 GiB DDR3-RAM, USB 3 and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

distribution

Originally, the BeagleBoard was sold exclusively through Digi-Key , but there are now other purchase options in Germany as well. Several manufacturers produce compatible boards.
