The Ben-My-Chree is a Ro-Ro - Ferry to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company . The ship is used on the route between Douglas on the Isle of Man and Heysham in England. At times there is also a service between Douglas and Birkenhead .

history

The ship was built under the hull number 971 at the Dutch shipyard Van der Giessen-De Noord . The keel was laid on October 28, 1997, the launch on April 4, 1998. Completion was on July 3, 1998. The cost of construction was £ 24 million.

Technical data and equipment

The drive of the vessel by two Caterpillar - diesel engines (type: MaK 9M32) with in each case 4.320  kW power . The motors act on two variable pitch propellers via reduction gears . The speed of the ship is given as 19  knots . The ship is equipped with two bow thrusters .

Two shaft generators from Leroy-Somer are available for power generation, each of which is driven by the main engine via an output shaft . They each provide 1,160 kW. In addition, three diesel generator sets are available, in which the generators are driven by MAN B&W diesel engines (type: 6L16 / 24) with an output of 515 kW each.

The ship has two ro-ro decks , the lower, closed ro-ro deck, which is on the main deck, and the partially open ro-ro deck above. The clear height of the decks is between 4.90 and 5.20 meters. A total of 1,235  meters of lane are available. The two ro-ro decks are connected by a ramp. The main deck is accessible via a stern ramp . The entrance to the main deck is 12 meters wide and 5.4 meters high. It is closed at sea by the stern ramp, which is a total of 12 meters long.

There are 20 connections available on board for trucks or trailers with temperature-controlled cargo.

The ship was initially approved for 500 passengers. For reasons of space, however, a maximum of around 350 passengers were on board during a crossing. At the beginning of 2004, the ship was rebuilt, especially in the area of the superstructure, and additional passenger areas were added. This increased the passenger capacity to over 600 people. Four-bed cabins are available for 80 passengers. Recliners are also available. The crew consists of a maximum of 22 people who are accommodated in eight single cabins and 14 double cabins.

Others

The ship is based on a design for the Italian Viamare project. Several Ro-Ro ships from the design were built at Dutch and Italian shipyards in the early 1990s.

The draft modified for the construction of the ship later served as a template for the construction of two ferries for Bornholmstrafikken , the Hammerodde and the Dueodde .
