Benedictus Aretius also Benedictus Marti (* around 1522 in Bätterkinden ; † March 22, 1574 in Bern ) was a Swiss theologian, botanist , pedagogue, geographer and reformer.

Live and act

Aretius was born the son of a priest under the surname Marti and later graced his name as a scholar. To study he went to Bern , Strasbourg and Marburg , where he studied theology, astronomy, mathematics and botany. Study trips took him to Cologne and Wittenberg . He published his own studies, edited the writings of Paracelsus and taught logic in Marburg .

In 1548 he became a grammar school teacher at the Latin school in Bern and in 1549 its rector. In 1553 he was appointed professor of Greek and Hebrew by the Bern Academy , and in 1563 he succeeded Wolfgang Musculus as professor of theology.

On behalf of the Bern Council, he justified the execution of Giovanni Valentino Gentilis on September 10, 1566 by defending the early Christian doctrine of the Trinity. With his writings, Aretius stood up for peace in the church and thus promoted unification within the Protestants.
