The Berf is a right-hand tributary of the Schwalm . It rises near the Geiersrod desert around two kilometers south of Görzhain ( Schwalm-Eder district ) and two kilometers north of Bieben ( Vogelsberg district ) near the BAB 5 . The source height is about 440 meters. The next mountain is the Hohe Balz with a summit height of 444 meters.

First, the Berf, called Schwarzwasser in this section , flows in a south-westerly direction following the BAB 5 towards Lingelbach . Here it is crossed by the state road 3161. At the height of Lingelbach the Erlenbach flows into the Schwarzwasser. Shortly before Berfa at the height of the Hemmberg it swings strongly to the northwest and is crossed by the BAB 5. After about 300 meters, the Längelbach flows into the river now known as the Berf. Now it flows parallel to the state road 3157 towards the village of Berfa. In the further course the river winds through the landscape and reaches Elbenrod . The direction of flow is maintained by the Berf and reaches Hattendorf , finally flowing into the Schwalm northeast of Heidelbach at Heidelberg .

From the source to the mouth, the Berf overcomes a height difference of 130 meters and is 18.3 kilometers long. It has a catchment area of 34,812 square kilometers.
