Berg Fidel - a school for everyone is a German documentary by Hella Wenders from 2011 . The film shows the four students David, Jakob, Lucas and Anita, who attend the Berg Fidel elementary school in the district of the same name in Münster . The primary school is characterized by the fact that children with and without special educational needs are taught together in mixed-age classes . The second part of the film series is the documentary A completely normal WG by Georg Schönharting .

action

David is a good student who occasionally gets bored when doing school assignments. In the class he is considered a “ precocious threesome ” when he checks the spelling of a classmate, for example. Nevertheless, he is accepted in the group and only later in the film does one recognize that his eyesight and hearing are impaired due to Stickler's syndrome . His big dream is to become an astronomer . About his impairment, he says: “I can't hear well or see well and that's Stickler's syndrome and a syndrome is something where something is different from birth, but it doesn't really bother me. I can still run pretty much as fast as Niklas. ”His brother Jakob stands out because of his lovable manner when he comforts other children. He has Down syndrome , speaks very indistinctly and has poor motor skills. His classmates understand him anyway. Lucas is aware that due to his dyslexia he learns more slowly than other children in his class. He is concerned with the question of justice when he is not tinkering with a toy sports car. Anita, who is quite tall for her age, comes from Kosovo . She has the big dream of becoming a model, but hardly finds time to study because she has to take care of her smaller siblings. In addition, the whole family is threatened with deportation .

The film shows how the children learn from and with one another. The viewer sees everyday processes such as the kitchen service or the meeting of a class council in which David, as chairman, consults with the other classmates about the bad behavior of other classmates. Towards the end, several black screens show which way the children will go to school.

production

The film was supported by the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB) and shot in Münster with a budget of around 34,000 euros. Wenders accompanied the children for three years at school, at home and in their free time. The German Hörfilm gGmbH endowed the film with support from the Action Man with audio description from. The DVD was released on March 23, 2013.

Awards

The film was awarded the Documentary Film Prize at the Five Lakes Film Festival in 2012. He received the Lüdia, the main and audience award , at the Lünen Kinofest in 2011. He also won the Max Ophüls Prize in Saarbrücken in 2012 .

criticism

“'Berg Fidel - a school for everyone' is a quiet film in which things explain themselves. Somehow it is certainly a plea for comprehensive school , but a quiet one that has all five senses together and a world view in the heart in which cohesion is the focus; In Berg Fidel, one has the impression that each of these children is the most perfect version of himself. "

“So watch, and above all listen to what the heroes say: They are called Anita, David and Lucas. Students at the Berg Fidel primary school in Münster, regardless of whether this is a model school or a reform pedagogical chimera , they are infinitely clever. And Hella Wenders shows us that. "

- taz

“Both the charm and the credibility of this film are largely due to the fact that it focuses on the children portrayed and only asks them, not teachers or parents, for their opinions. If the children are amazed with their conclusions or if they are observed interacting with one another, the film reminds in parts of the French box office success Être et avoir . "

- Kino-Zeit.de

"Sensitive documentation about the Berg Fidel school and its integrative special educational concept, using the example of four students."

“The problem with the film, however, is that Wenders wants to avoid pedagogical explanations and only let the children talk. That doesn't do the film any good, because it can't be consistently maintained. Again and again Wenders has to fall back on explanatory subtitles, ask suggestive questions or let the viewer search for the connections. "
