Berndt Keller

Berndt Keller (born November 15, 1946 in Großbardau ) is a German sociologist and administrative scientist as well as a professor emeritus for labor and social policy at the University of Konstanz .

Life

Berndt Keller was born as the son of the farmer Gustav Keller and his wife Irmgard, b. Dombrowe was born in Großbardau, today the municipality of Grimma , in the Leipzig district. He attended elementary school in Bochum from 1953 to 1957 and the Lessing grammar school in Bochum from 1957 to 1966 . After completing a shortened military service between 1966 and 1967 , he studied social sciences from 1967 to 1971 at the Ruhr University in Bochum . From 1971 until his doctorate as Dr. rer. soc. at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in 1973 in the subject of sociology at the University of Essen, Keller was a scientific assistant (in charge of administration) in the subject of sociology. From 1973 to 1975 Keller was a regular research assistant until his appointment to the Academic Council in the subject of empirical social research at the University of Essen in 1975. Grants from the German Research Foundation enabled Keller to do research and study at the University of California, Berkeley from 1975 to 1977 in the USA and from 1979 to 1981 participation in the research project "Industrial Relations in the Public Sector". In 1981 Berndt Keller completed his habilitation at the University of Essen.

From 1984 to 1986 Keller held the position of a substitute professor for labor and social policy in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Konstanz . This was followed by the substitution of a professorship for sociology at the University of Essen between 1986 and 1987 and, from 1987, the regular takeover of the chair for labor and social policy at the University of Konstanz. Between 1990 and 1991, Keller received a scholarship from the Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation . In 1994 he was Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the University of Warwick in Great Britain. Research semesters followed in the winter semester 2003/04 at the University of California, Berkeley in the USA and in the winter semester 2005/06 at the Institute of Economics and Social Sciences of the Hans-Böckler Foundation in Düsseldorf. Keller retired in the 2009/2010 winter semester.

From August to December 2011, Berndt Keller is Visiting Professor at Cornell University in the United States. There he conducts research on the topic of “Public sector employment relations in comparative perspective”.

Berndt Keller was, among other things, chairman of the International Industrial Relations Association , section in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The focus of Keller's research activities are the options for action by labor policy actors. In doing so, he looks at processes such as deregulation , decentralization and flexibilization at different government levels . An actor-centered approach and the rational choice approach form the basis for his work.

Teaching

The courses offered by Berndt Keller included events on the subject of "Atypical employment relationships ", " Organizational research ", " Industrial relations and labor markets in the public sector ", "European labor policy" and "Sport and politics".
