Bernhard Hofmann (SA member)

Bernhard Hofmann (born November 22, 1896 in Jahnsbach ; † November 19, 1982 in Crailsheim ) was a high-ranking German SA leader .

Life

Hofmann joined the Saxon foot artillery regiment No. 19 as a volunteer in 1915 and took part in the First World War with the rank of lieutenant in the reserve . In the summer of 1919 he led a unit in the Freikorps Württemberg volunteer department in Haas . After his discharge from the army on January 21, 1920, Hofmann completed a course of study at the State Technical Center in Reutlingen and then worked as a commercial and industrial employee in Saxony.

In 1924 he joined the Stahlhelm , which he left when he joined the NSDAP on May 1, 1930 with membership number 244.096 and on the same day joined the SA at SA-Sturm 4/1 in Chemnitz . In the following years Hofmann rose through several promotions within the SA; in addition, he was accepted into the Wehrmacht on October 1, 1935 as a first lieutenant in the reserve . In January 1934 he was also a member of the City Council of Annaberg and was on the list of proposals for the general election in 1936 , but received no mandate.

On August 29, 1939, Hofmann was called up for military service with the infantry and participated as an officer in the French campaign in 1940 and the Russian campaign in 1941. After being awarded the Knight's Cross on September 26, 1942, he was promoted to group leader on October 22 , the second highest rank of the SA. One day after being transferred to the Führer Reserve on May 31, 1943, Hofmann was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the Reserve and on the same day transferred to Munich to lead the SA Hochland group . On June 20 he was released from military service and placed in the UK as SA leader .

From October 1944 on, Hofmann was Gaustabsführer of the Volkssturm in the Gau Munich-Upper Bavaria and lastly from April 25th to 28th 1945 combat commander of Munich, until he was replaced by Rudolf Hübner, which was due to lack of hardship .
