Berthold Paul (* 1948 in Aumühle near Hamburg ) is a German composer of serious music , pianist, music publisher, conductor and photographer.

Life

Paul studied piano, music theory, pedagogy and composition at the Hamburg Conservatory , the latter with Walter Steffens. This was followed by further studies at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg with the subjects piano with Reimer Küchler and Ferry Gebhardt, composition and theory with Werner Krützfeldt and conducting with Albert Bittner .

His works were first performed in Hamburg in 1968 with members of the NDR symphony orchestra . In 1969 the first international performance took place at the GAUDEAMUS festival in Holland. Also in 1969, at the age of 21, his chamber music and orchestral works were published by the international music publishers Sikorski , Hamburg. Paul received his first composition prize in 1970 from the LTM-VDMK Association of German Music Educators and Performing Artists, Hamburg. Its first orchestral performance took place in 1972 with the Siegerland Orchestra . His work Nouvelles pour Orchester was performed . The concert was recorded and broadcast by Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) . All works were written on behalf of ensembles, the state government of Schleswig-Holstein and German and international broadcasters. Almost all works are produced by German broadcasters, as well as broadcasters in the USA, Australia, Spain, Austria and Denmark.

In 1975 he founded the “Musica Nova-Aktuell” series in Reinbek , which took over the financing and patronage. Paul took over - together with his wife Ingeborg Sawade , a multi-instrumentalist - the voluntary care of the same for ten years. In all concerts of the “Musica Nova aktuell” were u. a. Performed works by Berthold Paul. 24 works that were commissioned by Paul were premiered in the series in Reinbek. There were also several German premieres, as well as radio productions for which Paul had taken care of, concert recordings in cooperation with the “new work of the ndr” in Hamburg and television recordings. Paul achieved that the series “Musica Nova aktuell” was financially and ideally supported by the state government of Schleswig-Holstein. The 188th concert “das neue werk des ndr” took place in connection with the 15th concert “Musica Nova aktuell”. The 30th concert was played by the orchestra of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk a. a. with a commissioned work by Berthold Paul 1985, STUFEN for large orchestra op.46.

Ensemble New Horizons

In 1984 he founded the Ensemble Kaleidoskop together with his wife Ingeborg Sawade, Norbert Linke and Annette Linke. In 1990 the ensemble was named Ensemble Neue Horizonte. From 1984 to 1989 it was funded by the state government of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1985 he was invited by the state government to tour high schools and vocational schools in Schleswig-Holstein with 50 concerts. In the 1980s and 1990s the Ensemble Neue Horizonte also received funding from the Senate of Hamburg. As a member of the ensemble, Berthold Paul gave concerts in the cathedral in Meißen , in the main church St. Petri Hamburg , in the cathedral in Quedlinburg , in the cathedral in Schwerin , in the lower church of the Frauenkirche Dresden , in Luther's preaching church in Wittenberg and in Bach's baptistery in Eisenach . The actress Angélique Duvier wrote several poems that were set to music by Paul and performed by the ensemble.

In 1997 he resumed composing for other ensembles. A work for ten brass instruments, “Aufbruch”, was premiered in 1997 in the Cologne Philharmonic by members of the Rheinische Philharmonie and the Gürzenich Orchestra . Paul founded the music publisher AURUM in the early 2000s and began publishing chamber music by Norbert Linke , Alfred Goodman, Peter Heeren and Ingeborg Sawade. He has been working as a photographer since 2001 and published the illustrated book Melanie . Berthold Paul lives with his wife as a freelance composer in Reinbek and Hamburg.
