The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester is a symphonic radio orchestra of the North German Radio (NDR) based in Hamburg . It was founded in 1945 and was called the NDR Symphony Orchestra until 2016 .

history

Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt began building the orchestra in 1945 on behalf of the British military government . He visited German prisoner-of-war camps in Schleswig-Holstein and asked musicians from the symphony and opera orchestras that had been disbanded during the last years of the war to come to Hamburg for an audition after their release. The best of them were hired. As early as August 1945 there was a first concert in the Hamburg music hall, which had been spared from war damage. Yehudi Menuhin played Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's violin concerto , accompanied by Schmidt-Isserstedt and the new symphony orchestra, which was called the NWDR-Sinfonieorchester after the founding of the NWDR .

After the Northwest German Broadcasting Corporation was divided into NDR and WDR , the orchestra was renamed NDR Symphony Orchestra in 1956 . Classical, romantic and, to a large extent, contemporary compositions are performed. The main venue so far is the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg . The orchestra is now at home on all stages around the world. It was particularly successful under the direction of Günter Wand , who was made honorary conductor in 1987. With him, the orchestra in Japan was honored for “The best performance of 2000”.

With the completion of the Elbphilharmonie , the NDR Symphony Orchestra has become the concert hall's residence orchestra. At the beginning of the 2016 season, the orchestra was renamed the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester . Andrea Zietzschmann has been head of the orchestra, choir and concerts division at NDR since November 1, 2013 , and her duties also included moving the orchestra from the Laeiszhalle to the Elbphilharmonie. In mid-November 2016, the orchestra moved into its own premises in the building and now has its own recording studio in addition to offices, tuning rooms and storage rooms. The NDR has to pay an annual rent of around 913,000 euros. In addition, there are costs for audio management for concert recordings and the rent for a conductor's room. It has been agreed that the amounts will be adjusted annually in line with general price developments ( inflation adjustment ).
