Alexander Šumski

Alexander Šumski (in Germany mostly Alexander Sumski , Romanian Alexandru Şumski ; born November 26, 1933 in Timișoara , Kingdom of Romania ) is a Romanian-German musicologist , pianist , conductor , composer and former university music director in Tübingen .

Live and act

Alexander Šumski received his musical training in the subjects piano, composition and conducting at the University of Music Bucharest; Masterclasses with Franco Ferrara in Siena and Venice complemented his conducting training. In 1984 Šumski received his doctorate in musicology from the University of Hamburg on the subject of "Studies in Romanian Church Music".

Šumski began his musical career as a concert pianist in his native Romania. As a conductor he took over the direction of the Romanian Radio Choir in Bucharest in 1960, in 1964 he became director of the Banat Philharmonic and in 1968 chief conductor of the Bucharest Academic Symphony Orchestra. At the same time, Šumski taught music theory and solfège as a lecturer at the Bucharest University of Music.

In 1972 Šumski moved to Germany and was University Music Director in Tübingen until 1999. In addition to teaching at the musicological institute, his duties included leading the university's symphony orchestra and the university choir.

With the symphony orchestra of the university , Šumski performed almost all key works of the symphonic repertoire. Numerous world-class soloists, including a. Anne-Sophie Mutter , Bruno Leonardo Gelber , Helen Donath , Barry Tuckwell , David Geringas , Emmanuel Krivine and Gerhard Oppitz performed with the student orchestra under Šumski's direction.

In 1973 Alexander Šumski founded the Camerata vocalis , the university's chamber choir. The extraordinary technical flexibility, the rich palette of timbres and the convincing vocal performance made the Camerata an important musical ambassador for the University of Tübingen. Concerts and joint music projects have taken the young singers to almost all European countries and, since the early 1980s, regularly to the African continent. Numerous recordings and radio broadcasts with Südwestfunk Baden-Baden or with Radio France - France Musique in Paris testify to the great success of the Camerata.

Interdisciplinary events with prominent professors from the university, such as Hans Küng ( Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, Brückner's 8th Symphony), Hansmartin Decker-Hauff ( Britten's “Young Person's Guide”) and the Slavist Ludolf Müller ( Chekhov and Tchaikovsky ) made the Collegium musicum one important partner in the newly created Studium generale .

Šumski set himself the task of promoting young soloists. The then 11-year-old Anne-Sophie Mutter made her debut in 1975 with Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in the Tübingen Festsaal, accompanied by the Tübingen students.

From 1985 to 2005 he was in charge of the “Forum for Young Interpreters” series, a series of concerts at the Kreissparkasse Reutlingen.

From 1978 to 1980, in addition to his work in Tübingen, Šumski was choir director at the Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Hamburg.

Together with various chamber ensembles of various casts, Šumski conducted numerous first performances in Tübingen, including Stravinski's “Story of the Soldier”, Schönberg's “Pierrot lunaire” and Poulenc's organ concert.

For several years, Šumski also directed the Tübingen Chamber Orchestra. He has also been invited as a guest conductor of numerous renowned symphony orchestras, including the Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Hamburg and Hanover, the Orquesta National in Caracas, the Minsk Philharmonic and the National Orchestra of the Romanian Radio in Bucharest. He has also directed concerts at major international music festivals, such as the Amazonas Festival in Manaus, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, the Festival for Sacred Music in Riga and the Lake Constance Festival . Tour trips have taken him to many European countries, to North and South America, as well as to Africa, Asia and Australia.

As a musicologist, Alexander Šumski initially devoted himself to Byzantine music, especially Romanian psaltics and the sacred choral music of Romanian composers.

Since the 1980s, the focus of his musicological activity has been on researching, adapting and performing works by Upper Swabian monastery composers of the 18th century. In the research and edition center for Upper Swabian monastery music at the University of Tübingen , founded by Šumski in 1986, almost 300 compositions from the former monasteries of Upper Swabia were rediscovered, edited and adapted to modern performance practice by 2005. Under Šumski's direction, they were performed at the respective places of origin, produced in the studio of Südwestrundfunk Baden-Baden and released as CDs in the “Music in Upper Swabian Monasteries” series by Orchestrola / da music.

Honors

The University of Tübingen awarded Šumski the title of professor. In 2005 Alexander Šumski was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon, in 2008 he became an honorary citizen of his Romanian hometown, in 2011 he received from Pope Benedict XVI. the dignity of a Commander of the Order of St. Silvester .

voluntary work

Alexander Šumski was an honorary member of the extended federal board of the German Composers' Association . He also worked in numerous associations: u. a. as a member of the Board of Trustees of the International School Music Academy Schloss Kapfenburg, as a member of the Board of Trustees “Young Composed” in the State Music Council of Baden-Württemberg, as curator of the German-Italian Cultural Society (ACIT) Venice. From 1998 to 2014 he was a member of the Broadcasting Council of Südwestrundfunk.

After retiring, Sumski continued his professional activity both as a practitioner and as a musicologist. Until 2005 he was head of the research and editing department for Upper Swabian monastery music at the University of Tübingen. Under his aegis, all scores and edition materials on Upper Swabian monastery music were housed in the Rottenburg diocesan library. Šumski continued to work as a musicologist and conductor.
