The Adelien ( Forestiera ) are a genus of plants within the family of the olive plants (olive plants). The approximately 21 species are common in North, Central and South America .

Vegetative characteristics

Forestiera species form deciduous, sparsely branched and privet- like shrubs . The buds are bare and egg-shaped with a length of 1.5 to 2 centimeters.

The opposite leaves are simple. The leaf margin is entire or finely serrated.

Generative characteristics

For Forestiera -Arten there is a diocyte or subdiocyte . The flowers are in axillary clusters or clusters and usually appear before the leaves. The flowers are greenish and inconspicuous. The inflorescence is simple and consists of four to six sepals . Two to three stamens are formed. The ovary is twofold.

The fruits are 3 to 7 millimeters long, dark purple to black drupes with a thin, dry-skinned mesocarp .

The genus Forestiera was established by Jean Louis Marie Poiret . The scientific name of the genus Forestiera honors the French botanist and doctor André Robert Forestier (1741/46 - 1812). Synonyms for Forestiera Poir. nom. cons. are: Adelia P.Browne , Bigelovia Sm. , Borya Willd. , Carpoxis Raf. , Geisarina Raf. Nudilus Raf.

The genus Forestiera belongs to the tribe Oleeae within the family of the Oleaceae (Oleaceae).
