from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilbert Lee "Bill" Gore (born January 25, 1912 in Meridian , Idaho , † July 26, 1986 in Lander , Wyoming ) was an American businessman and entrepreneur. He founded WL Gore & Associates with his wife Genevieve . Gore held numerous patents in the fields of plastics , fluorocarbons, and electronics . He was considered a fresh air fanatic.

Career

Bill Gore, son of Dora Bain Clark (1887–1980) and Roscoe Blaine Gore (1885–1939), was born in 1912 in Ada County . Nothing is known about his youth. Gore received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering in 1933 and a Master of Science degree in physical chemistry from the University of Utah at Salt Lake City in 1935 . In 1935 he married his wife Genevieve "Vieve" Marie Walton (1913–2005), daughter of Ethel May Arnold (1886–1976) and Thaddeus Walton (1892–1983). The couple had five children: Robert W. , Susan, Ginger, David, and Elizabeth. Gore worked for the American Smelting and Refining Company , Remington Arms, and DuPont over the years . He was interested in plastics technology , the possible uses of statistical methods in experiments and the methods of operations research . He left DuPont in 1957 to manufacture electronic ribbon cables for use in computers, which were insulated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Together with his wife, he founded the company WL Gore & Associates in the garage of their house in Newark ( Delaware ) in 1958 . One of the key processes involved in processing PTFE was suggested in 1957 by her son Robert, who was then a college sophomore . The orders for their MULTI-TET ribbon cable increased until 1960, especially a contract with the Denver Water Company led to the construction of a separate production facility.

Under Bill Gore's leadership, the company grew from a humble business to an international corporation best known for its waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex fabric. Today the company has a broad portfolio of products based on PTFE, which includes cables for electronic signal transmission, medical implants and composites.

Bill Gore was President of WL Gore & Associates until his resignation in 1976, which happened in favor of his son Robert. Gore was Chairman of the Board of Directors until his death. He died in July 1986 at the age of 74 of complications from a heart attack while backpacking the Wind River Range in Wyoming .

Awards and honors

Bill Gore has received numerous corporate, educational, and community awards, including a University of Delaware Medal of Distinction (1983) and an honorary doctorate in humanities (1971) from Westminster College . In 1985, Bill Gore received the Prince Philip Award for Polymers in the Service of Humanity, honoring Gore's medical device division. The award is given to polymers that provide an essential service to humanity. Gore was inducted posthumously into the Plastics Hall of Fame in 1990. In 2012 it was counted among the 50 most influential Delaware products of the past 50 years.
