action

Morrie Tanager had to take responsibility early on. Not yet grown up himself, he took care of his two siblings Jay and Ida after the death of his parents. In the meantime, both have moved out of their former parents' house, where Morrie and his wife Betty are now trying to lead a normal life. But his siblings keep catching up with him. Jay was hit by a car and is now supposed to move in with them again, and Ida has announced that she will visit her parents' house again after six years of absence. The visit of the two siblings causes a lot of trouble in the family home and in the end it is not only Betty and Morrie's marriage that is endangered.

Jay has special views about the world, lives vegan and otherwise very Spartan. Ida, in turn, enjoys life and men wherever she can. Both of these do not fit into the bourgeois ideas of Morrie and his wife. He is currently hoping for a permanent position as a teacher and simply cannot afford negative publicity. His neighbor Paul has a say in this regard in the school and so Morrie doesn't want to spoil it with him. The neighbors hear the hustle and bustle in his house every day and so they want to give Paul and Laura a meal. To do this, they send Jay and Ida into town so that they can spend the evening there and be undisturbed. But now the disturbance threatens from Jay's wife, who turns up unexpectedly and is looking for her husband. The police are reportedly looking for him on charges of molesting a child. Without further ado, the neighbors say goodbye and Morrie's wife also leaves the house. Desperate, Morrie sits down with his siblings when they return. They talk and work through their past. Morrie realizes that he has to talk to his wife too. She thinks about family planning with all her might and Morrie always kept a low profile. He finally wants to tell her that he is afraid that his genetic material could be damaged. His father had already committed suicide and everything doesn't seem to be all right with Jay either.

Ida also got something clear during their conversation, because she is still drawn to her childhood sweetheart. She just left Gary back then and moved into the world while he was left deeply injured. But he is now engaged and so she has to realize that it is probably too late for her love. In the meantime, the police appear and take Jay with them, whom they let go again after a DNA swab. He admits touching the girl because he just wanted to touch people all day.

After Morrie has to hear at school that he is unsustainable as a teacher, he sees himself freed from all constraints and finally tells his neighbors what he thinks of them. When Betty returns shortly afterwards, he withdraws with her into the bedroom without a word.

Reviews

"A film delirious between sensitive tragic-comedy and faecal-humorous satire, whose apt visual metaphors and good actors cannot hide the lack of a directorial aim."

The organizers of the Sundance Film Festival wrote that the "eccentric, lyrical comedy" was about socialization and growing up. For Jay these would mean a life within societal boundaries and with the occasional lie; for Ida - responsibility for her actions. The "outstanding" cast and the demonstration of the change process of the siblings would be satisfactory.
