Birkenhain is a district of the Saxon town of Wilsdruff in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district .

Birkenhain is located, surrounded by farmland, directly on the federal highway 4 . The Dorfbach, an eastern tributary of the Kleine Triebisch, flows through the birch grove .

Birkenhain is a forest hoof village and was first mentioned in a document in 1380. Since 1696 was the basic rule in manor Wilsdruff, before the manor Limbach. In 1856 Birkenhain was transferred to the Wilsdruff court office , before the place belonged to the Dresden office . In 1875, Birkenhain became part of the Meißen administration . On July 1, 1950, Birkenhain was incorporated into Limbach. Since 1952 the place belonged to the Freital district in the Dresden district (later the district ). Between 1899 and 1972 the place had a connection to the Freital-Potschappel-Nossen narrow-gauge railway with the "Birkenhain-Limbach stop" .

During the GDR era at the beginning of the 1950s, the "Kinderglück" holiday camp was built and operated in the village . Since 1971, apprentices have also been taught there who were given language lessons in German centrally here before starting their vocational training in the GDR. They came from Vietnam , Cuba , Mongolia , Angola , Mozambique , Yemen , Mali , Madagascar , Laos , Namibia , Zambia , Cambodia , Congo and Zimbabwe , among others . The PLO had also sent young Palestinians here.

On January 1, 1974 Limbach was incorporated into Wilsdruff. From 1994 Birkenhain belonged to the district of Meißen . In 1998 it became the Weißeritzkreis and in 2008 it became the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district .
