The Bismarck Tower near Bad Lauterberg in the Harz low mountain range is a lookout tower built in 1904 on the border between Lauterberg's urban area and the non-parish Harz region of the Göttingen district ( Lower Saxony ). It was built in honor of Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (1815–1898) and belongs to the Harz Club -Zweigverein Bad Lauterberg.
Geographical location
The Bismarck Tower is located in the Upper Harz in the Harz Nature Park . It stands on the east knoll (approx. 535 m above sea level ) of the Kummelberg ( Kummel ; 536 m ) located directly north of the core town of Bad Lauterberg .
History and description
The initiator of the tower construction was the medical council August Tischmann, who chaired the building committee founded in 1902. The first donations were collected in November 1902, so that the construction work, which was carried out by the Bad Lauterberg master mason Walter Nagel, could begin quickly. The laying of the foundation stone took place on April 10, 1904, the inauguration ceremony on July 19, 1904. On July 17, 2004 the 100th anniversary was celebrated.
The approximately 15 m high Bismarck tower on a square floor plan with about 6 m edge length was built from porphyry and bricks . A relief by Bismarck made in the bronze foundry is located halfway above the entrance to the tower. There was a fire bowl on the top of the tower, which was removed in 1987. In 2000 the building was completely renovated.
In the tower, a 60-step stone staircase in the basement and middle floor and an 11-step iron spiral staircase on the upper floor lead to the 4 m by 4 m viewing platform at around 550 m above sea level. From the viewing platform of the Bismarck Tower the view falls to the Großer Knollen , to the Hanskühnenburg , to Sankt Andreasberg , to the Brocken , to the Wurmberg , to the Odertalsperre and to the Ravensberg , to Bad Lauterberg including the districts Barbis , Bartolfelde and Osterhagen as well as to the southern and southwestern Harz foreland.
The tower is included as no. 115 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin. It is on the Harzer Baudensteig .
