The Oder dam in the Harz Mountains lies above Bad Lauterberg in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony and dams the Rhume tributary Oder . The dam was put into operation after three years of construction in 1934, owned and operated by the Harz waterworks .
purpose
The dam serves the following purposes:
- Flood protection
- Low water increase
- Power generation
Some of these are contradicting functions. A water basin that is as empty as possible is desirable for flood protection, and a dam as full as possible for raising the low water level. Accordingly, there is an operating plan for water management that depends on the seasons and the expected water volumes, e.g. B. Melting snow after winter, drought in summer.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is constructed as a dam made of loose stone material (gravel) with a central concrete core and a sealing clay layer . The concrete wall has joints that follow deformations of the entire dam without leaking. The design is essentially similar to that of the Sösetalsperre, which was put into operation only a few years earlier .
pumped storage power plant
The reservoir of the dam originally served as the upper basin of a pumped storage power plant . Directly under the dam there is an underwater basin with a 7.5 m high earth dam, which served as a compensation basin. The power plant is also located at the foot of the dam. It has two turbines with a total output of 5.04 MW (possibly 6.2 MW). The pumping operation has been dispensed with since 1986 because it was no longer economical.
Storage power plant
Since the shutdown of the pumped storage power plant, the Odertalsperre power plant has been operated as a storage power plant. To do this, the turbine runs a few hours a day to fill the equalization basin below the main dam; A continuous amount of water (usually at least 1.3 m³ / s) is released from the equalization basin to the underwater.
Additional lines
In addition to the outflow of the Oder, water from the Sperrlutter and Breitenbeektal valleys to the north can be transferred to the Odertalsperre via three drainage structures. The water is fed through a weir into a slope ditch and two water transfer tunnels (Großer Eschenbergstollen and Hillebillestollen) of the Oder dam. These by-lines can make up about 30% of the inflow.
Touristic
There are water sports in the form of fishing, swimming, sailing and surfing. There is a restaurant and a campsite at the reservoir.
Fish fauna
The Oder Reservoir is primarily a salmonid body of water with a stream - rainbow and lake trout . There are also pike , pikeperch , perch , eel , carp , tench and vendace . There are also numerous species of whitefish .
